Terb logic test: Read the background below, then say what is wrong with the logic of the following statement (from CNN):
Background
Juan Carlos Zarate, who served as deputy national security adviser for combating terrorism under former President George W. Bush, speaking about the pirates that hijacked an American cargo ship but were forced off the ship by the unarmed crew. The 4 pirates are armed with AK-47's in a lifeboat, with one hostage, with 10 ten days supply of food, no engine, no toilet, and are 350 miles from shore. The ship has sailed on, leaving them head to head with a U.S. Navy destroyer. More U.S. Navy ships are on the way, and the FBI has started negotiations with those on the lifeboat.
Statement
Zarate called the standoff "a classic hostage situation, which is difficult to resolve. It is certainly difficult to resolve on the high seas where we have limited levers to play."
Zarate said the hostage holders appear to be in the stronger position , though at first glance -- four men holding a fifth aboard a 28-foot powerless lifeboat in the ocean hundreds of miles from shore -- that may not appear to be the case.
"I think they have the upper hand... in part, because they may not value their lives as much, and
they may not be using the same rational calculus that we would in this situation."
But, he said,
the pirates may not be able to turn that advantage into victory.
