I thought the meteorites were avoided by use of warp defusion mode, which alters time chain criteria to sort of make "transparent" any objects in the line path of the warp field (usually .5 km around the ship)? Although, this technology was only available to NCC-1701C and higher class starships, so I don't know about the original USS Enterprise.

From what I read when Roddenberry conceived the NCC-1701 for TOS, he envisioned the deflector beam to be like a large broom that sweeps or nudges objects out of the way.
