Allen compiled an 8-25 record with 15 saves in seven Major League seasons from 1969-75, his last in the Majors. He was a minor leaguer in 1976, and the Jays released him during their inaugural Grapefruit League season.

Prior to this, Jim "Catfish" Hunter had become a free agent before the 1975 season, because Oakland A's owner Charles O. Finley did not abide by the terms of Hunter's contract, which had stipulated the the team was to defer some of the contract monies by purchasing an annuity. Andy Messersmith and Dave McNally became free agents for 1976 by playing without a contract in 1975. The Blue Jays and Mariners were not allowed to participate in the 1976 'free agent draft', so they were only eligible to sign untendered players before their first season.
