One of my favourite cities to visit in the US. Bourbon street is crazy wild, preservation hall, cemetery one, Cajun dance bars and so much more. Quick story, booked a room at a hotel but were too early on arrival, bell boy put our bags in a closet, told him, "Man I sure could use a beer, he said, Y'all want a beer? Come on with me, took me outside to a bar a few steps down the road, walked into a bar, he yelled, Hey Momma, this man wants a beer, get him a beer and paid for it, would not take a tip, thanked him, sat at the bar, waitress gave me a beer as I looked at the wall behind the bar, there was a big stuffed black cat with its mouth wide open with its tongue hanging out, big tail stuck out in the air looking like a very scary feline. Laughed my ass off. Oh. I did give the bellhop a tip later. One warning, do not go anywhere day or night walking on your own. I had a couple of issues of being followed, so you have to be careful. Bottom line, it is an absolute must to visit the city and also surrounding area.Is New Orleans worth going to?
Any favorite hotels or bars?
Oysters haven't fully recovered from that big oil spill. Given global warming they may never come back to where they were...Its a fun town but grimy, crime ridden and hedonistic. During the day is best to visit places like the old cemeteries and the Garden District. Night time obviously for Bourbon St.
Beware of pickpockets, especially women who will dance up on you.
On the good side its tough to find a bad meal. The party on Bourbon street is famous. During the day oysters in numerous bars are cheap. So indulge.
Well thats shitty. When I used to go down it was a buck a pop. I'd eat a couple dozen a day as I wandered around the town at various bars.Oysters haven't fully recovered from that big oil spill. Given global warming they may never come back to where they were...
I heard Felix's Oyster House, a personal favorite, is now closed...Well thats shitty. When I used to go down it was a buck a pop. I'd eat a couple dozen a day as I wandered around the town at various bars.

Last thing about that area of Louisiana, if any of you had ever visited New Brunswick, I swear when you are down in Louisiana, you'd wonder if you were in Shediac. If you know the song by The Band, Acadian Driftwood you'd know why. Ah, I sure miss the playing of the washboard at the Cajun dance halls, LOL.loved New Orleans, tons to do, highlights are haunted ghost tours, aquarium, WW2 museum, french quarter bar crawl and live music scenes (too many bars to list), cemetery tours (Nic Cage's future tomb), alligator bayou tour, and the food is to die for.
make suer you avoid hurricane season which starts late December, but late Nov - early Dec is major conference season so the hotel prices could be higher.
as long as you stay in the touristy area you would be fine safety wise.
Also, some unusual types of food available at retail stores and restaurants, of course Cajun style meals, jambalaya, rabbit legs and gator tails which taste like chicken. LOL.I was just there in September and even then it was hot and humid. I'm afraid to ask about summer weather.
Went to some great restaurants and bars, my favorite bar was recommended by Anthony Bourdain in his TV series. It was one of his favorite dive bars in the city. Friend and I did afternoon drinking and the local characters in there were great. Check Point Charlie, cheap drinks too.
One of my favorite places was Mother's, set up like a cafeteria. Can get busy and can line outside but it moves really quick, I had a soft shell crab Po Boy, rice and beans, jambalaya and gumbo. It was our last so has to try everything
