Well after not being able to get out of my driveway this morning and too work I have decided to buy a car for winter. I am leaning toward Lexus RX330 so would love to hear any advice for SUVs to purchase.

Lexus is a good choice.
IMO, the Big Three in North America still produce junk. They only look good & give average performance in the first three months, then they start to self-destruct.
If they are free, I don't mind taking one of the Big Three's. If it is my hard earned money at stake, I am not giving it to the Big Three.

You did your homework: the Lexus offers a lot.
The 2005 Volkswagen Touareg is an interesting car, but the Lexus includes more features. The Mercedes M-Class is being replaced soon, The BMW M5 is on it's last leg as well. The Infinity FX35 could be an alternative.

why don't you rent one for a few days. there are lots or car rental agencies that carry a lot of suv's the best advice is to drive one first.

true. nothing pisses me off more than people with their "i'm invincible in my SUV" attitude. A buddy of mine had this attitude and laughed at me when I gave him a speech about being careful during the big snowstorm the other day. he laughed at me b/c i'm driving around in my lowered sport compact (which i like to call "snowplow" at this time of year") and ended up rear ending someone.

SUV's w/ all wheel drive or 4 wheel drive are good for traction (i'll still give ya a run for the money in my front wheeler with snows on) and clearance (ie. driving around when the roads aren't plowed) otherwise, they're a waste.

Never thought I'd say it, but heavier is better. My 300M is an ordinary vehicle in most respects, but even with the "cast-iron"
Dunlops it's a very competent winter vehicle. Love that traction control and heated seats. SUVs have traction, but the high centre of gravity makes them unstable, and they eat tires and gas. What really pisses me off, though, is that I cant see over them.

Sure, if you can afford it, go Japanese, but it's not the only choice.

Well said maximadude. there is almost nothing that you cant get out of with a set of good snow tires and front wheel drive. Most people who drive an SUV just want one, they dont need one. No disrespect to anyone but RX300 is a yuppie machine anyways.

You want my advice? Go with the best truck on the market. The Ford F150 crew cab. Then you got the comfort of a 4 door sedan AND the agility of a pick-up truck for those home depot runs on the week-end :)

I've driven SUV's and cars and all around i find cars more practical. In this type of weather you just have to compensate for the lack of 4 Wheel Drive with:
- Good snow tires
- Good winter driving skills (feel the road - it's all about traction)
- Patience
- Give yourself a longer window to get to where you need to go.

I've found that SUV's are handy at times but are just a gas guzzling machine with high insurance rates. A car is more economical and practical unless you need the towing capacity of an SUV (the equivalent interior spce can be found in a minivan).

The Suburu Outback is a compromise between the 2. I think more manufacturers will be developing similar cars going forward. I still don't see the need if you follow the above 4 steps.

I love all these people that feel the need to bash American Iron. I bought my 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 QuadCab about this time last year. It's been back to the dealer once....for the free oil change. It was the same story with my 94 Ram. Now if I had to by "japanese", I'd get a Honda Accord.....built in Ohio....
