A couple more considerations: first, do you need a new system? There are some very usable refurbished systems available for a decent price. Certainly there are great deals on monitors. Refurb Computers has locations downtown, in the Gloucester Centre, and in Merivale Mall. The Trailing Edge is in Bells Corners (in the area north of East Side Marios).

If you really do want a new custom-built system, PCCyber has a good reputation for quality. (Wellington St in Westboro, Bank in the Glebe, Robertson in Bells Cors, etc). Buying new means buying closer to the latest and greatest (which you probably don't actually need), but new and out of date seems like a waste of money.

I agree with Anynym's point. For what you want it to do, a good refurb is the choice. I've seen P4's 1.8Gz with Windows XP home for $200-220, advertised. Most are Dell. Some IBM & HP.

Actually Dell has Kiosks in some of the local malls (I've seen them in Bayshore & St Laurent) where you can actually see the equipment and then order if you like. Oops, missed some of the posts, this has already been mentioned .... my bad

The Computer Store on O'Conner near Laurier sells refurbs (Dell included), both laptop and desk for very reasonable rates which will do all you want and much more. Also provides service.

Peach Computers is right across the street and is good also.

I am a IT manager and have purchased many Dells Workstations, Laptops and servers in the last years. No.. I don't work for dell.. LOL!

I hear what you (& others) have to say about Dell. After all, with the way things are developing, I don't need a longterm, expensive system investment (10yrs). Hell, in 1yr, I expect a system to be outpaced by the latest new shit on the market. Dell isn't really sexy, but they get the job done and their price counts for something. HP is sexy - especially their laptops! I wanna get a wide-screen LCD too.

You folks are really great for all your suggestions. I think I'll look into Sprint & Dell.

It may be true that Dell offered the cheapest computer in terms of value and quality 3 years ago and before. These days, you can go to Future Shop or Best Buy and buy some brand names of equal quality but cheaper. And you don't have to wait for the 9 - 20 days of shipping. That is, unless you catch the "10 Days of Dell" specials when prices are really cheap. If things go wrong, then you can just take it back instead of talking to the Dell rep on the phone. That complete care never worked for me when things did go wrong.

There are other places in town you can buy white box computers for a whole lot cheaper. However, they don't have such good OEM deals on Vista if you are planning to have an OS that comes with the computer so the brand names are better deal in this case. If you already have XP, then just buying a white box may save you $200-$400 than a similiar brand name even on a sub-$1000 computer.

You may want to consider using Linux as well for what you need. I don't have to re-install the computer or buy new computers for my kids anymore since I switched their computers to Linux when they used to keep getting spamware and viruses that no tools can get rid of. It was just easier for me to buy them a new computer than for me to find time to fix and reinstall the whole damn thing again. Google Picasa is available is Linux these days too so you should be all right if all you need is some simple photo editing capabilities. I ran Windows in a VMWare image for them too. If Windows gets corrupted, I just blow it away and restart from the fresh VM image. VMWare player is free too. It is so easy these days. You just need to get a friend to make you a Windows VMware image if you don't know how or have the software. Shouldn't be too hard.

Yes. 'Tis true. I first went to Peach last century in '82. They shall be missed. But across the street at what was Mr. Diskette in those days.... hahha. Is Computer Books For Less. They have a website, but its not very good, but I think it has their phone number. I saw tiny Dells that were P4s for 200$ with an operating system! For basic tasks, they are great and quiet. Lol no gaming, less you remember the old Leisure Suit Larry?

I'm not going to say anything about MDG that can't be learned from the "Search" function.

But the name of the store on OConnor approaching Laurier (across from where Peach was) is "Refurb Computers". It is not actually called "Computer Books for Less", although that store was co-located with them for a while and still appears on some signage. And contrary to reports, the store's website does list their inventory of monitors, desktops, laptops, and certain other items. Additionally they have a limited selection of printers and other goods in the store. See above for the website URL.

Ah yes, the days of diskettes & DOS. LSL was one of the first games I played.

Peach is still around but without the retail location.

As Slurp said, check out Monitor magazine. It's free at various places around the city. Lots of deals. Back cover of March issue has a Trailing Edge ad offering an off lease IBM NetVista P4, 1.8GHz. with Windows XP Pro for $199. Add some RAM & this would last for 3 years +.

The BEST store in town, has been in business for over 15years, I have bought many systems from them personally and sent many of my F&F ( Friends and Family ) there. The owner is a good person, and the pricing is very competitive, Service is outstanding - and these days that's important - they stand behind their stuff !!!

Laurier computers is on Laurier Ave. between Metcalfe and O'Connor can't miss it. The website is http://www.laurier.com/

Get cheap refills at Printwell. $12 buck each with coupons you'll get in mail... or you can pre-buy 10 refils for about $8 each.

If in a rush, encourage you to go the DELL route.

If Future Shop, Sunday is Friends/Family special 10% off everything (pretty much).

If you have time, surf over to www.redflagdeals.com and check out their forums. Best advice you can find on deals (mostly electronics) in canada.
