iPad's Market Share to Dip only Slightly in 2012: Report
By Beecher Tuttle , TechZone360 Contributor

The iPad will withstand the flood of Android devices and continue to be the dominant player in the tablet space in 2012, accounting for more than 62 percent of all tablet sales, according to market analysis firm TrendForce.

As the pioneer in the tablet game, Apple's market share is sure to slip each year as more competitors enter the market with rival tablets. This is what makes Tuesday's projections so astounding. With a 66 percent market share in 2011, Apple's dominance is barely waning, even with new devices hitting store shelves every day.

Even more impressive, TrendForce says that the iPad's market share won't drop below 60 percent until 2015, when it will still account for 59.3 percent of all tablets sold. The research firm believes that the iPad 3 – rumored to sport a high resolution display and industry-leading hardware/software integration – will help solidify Apple's position as the market leader.
"The only concern is that iPad 3’s high resolution panel comes with a low yield rate; whether or not the panel production will be enough to supply the market demand remains to be seen," says TrendForce.

Part of the rationale behind the projections is the lack of legitimate competition from rivals. While acknowledging the Kindle Fire's strong fourth quarter, the research firm notes that Amazon's tablet cannot match consumer expectations over the long term.

"In addition, according to the component makers, Amazon’s orders for panels in 1H12 decreased, which suggests at the time being, Kindle Fire is still unable to threaten iPad’s leading position," TrendForce adds.

Android, meanwhile, has failed to make a strong transition to a tablet platform, forcing several manufacturers to look to Microsoft's Windows 8 as an alternative option.
However, even with its famed Microsoft Office suite of apps, Windows 8 has a lot to prove, says TrendForce, "such as whether or not the ARM Windows 8 tablet is able to release as scheduled, the weight and battery life, and whether the software compatibility and interface design cater to the users’ preferences."
The iPad is expected to account for around 59 million of the 94 million tablets sold in 2012.

That is quite strange. There are numerous devices that out perform the Ipad. Also I've heard Android is more customizable, and user friendly.

Is it all just fan loyalty?

Let's say 50% fan loyalty; 25% having a huge number of apps and 25% marketing hype.

Interesting to note that they admit iPad only has a 66% market share. Usually, sources claim something in the order of 90%+.

Keep in mind the Kindle Fire does not have an HD screen, it drops pixels when showing 720p videos so it's not an apples to apples comparison vs 10" Android tablets.
For a $200 price point, most people don't care. Amazon flew right up to the #2 spot from what I gather for tablets.
Bezos got this one right, now everyone is scrambling to make a tablet to compete with THEM.

Now that he's got his one foot in the door, he's going up in size to compete with the larger tablets.
Brilliant move in retrospect.

Performance is not much of a factor except for gaming, look at the lowly spec Kindle Fire.. It's about easy integration with content providers, plug and play for the most part. Amazon and Apple have agreements in place with publishers.. Google is as famous for it's lack of interest in controlling piracy (Youtube) than working with the publishers.

Yeah I think Samsung etc are going to be in for a tough time trying to grow their market share and Apple will go down a bit too once Amazon sizes up too, especially if they price it at a loss like the 7".

It's more about ecosystem than it is about HW specs. Many are still caught in the old paradigm of buying OEM HW to run a standard OS (think windows boxes for the last decade). Most people don't run an app that pushes their computer, what determine their experience is the UI and ecosystem yet what drove their buying behavior was feeds and speeds.

What Apple (and recently Amazon) have done in the tablet market-space is create a powerful user experience with a good UI, abundant content (music, books, video) and apps (where the real innovation happens). Android has failed in the tablet market because it doesn't have a consistent OS, UI, or ecosystem. Before the iPad the tablet market was dead, it wasn't due to the lack of HW capability but to the limited usefulness for lack of ecosystem.

I hope they do.
It's one of the reasons I don't line up, jump on 1st gen anything. Let everyone else be the beta testers, workout the kinks, then when the time arises, I'll get one.

Never got my first smartphone till exactly a year ago, prior to that, had a Nokia for 4 years, they (Nokia) make incredible hardware.
