Yes they did!

I am calming down now but I left a very bad review to help me overcome my emotions lol
The odd thing is that they are rated A+ on the BBB website. They seem to have been around for YEARS. Perhaps the issue was service person specific and not company specific. I could see why someone unsuspecting would use them. They seem credible on paper.

Does the invoice show their City of Toronto license?

Does the invoice show the plumber who attended name?

If not, WRITE them and ask for that information.

Chances are they are neither licensed plumber (which is a regulated trade in Ontario) nor are they likely licensed by the City of Toronto.

Either way you can complain to the City over them not being licensed or their business practices.

Be VERY careful of what and how you reply. If you say that you are going to file a legal complaint with the City and Province UNLESS they refund however much, that is a criminal offence of extortion.

I had a clogged sink in my kitchen. I had my raffle winner coming over tomorrow so I thought I would call to check if anyone was available. I called a company named New Canadian Drain. First on Google. I called and ask them for a plumber. I didn't ask for an emergency nor did I asked for it to be done today. I was just checking my luck. To my big surprise the guy told me someone could be there shortly! Awesome! So I have him come over.

I asked if I could get an estimate on the phone, noone could give me an answer
I asked the technician if I could get a price, he told me the company was charging that he didn't know.

737$ for 23 minutes. There is no breakdown on the Bill. Just a description of what he did. I called and asked why they charge me that much - emergency fee, holidays, booking fee plus the job. But there is none of it on the bill.

Can I do something?
Anytime certain trades come in on a weekend they charge you more they should have told you before what the charge was before they showed up and before they started work. If they can't tell you the cost for the "call out fee" pass on them. Anytime you have something like that you can always pm me for someone. What they did was unethical.

Right?! It's always the same guy answering. However, the name on the bill is not the name of the company that I called.which I find weird...

I'm guessing all they did was snake the drain lol. $800 for that is bad and can't imagine someone handing you that invoice thinking that was ok

I won't go that far. This convo brought me back to reason. I wasn't nice tho..without asking for a refund I did ask them to settle together before I push this further. Offered to pay for the technician no problem but not for an emergency fee mentioned nowhere and other fee I wasn't aware of.

I just had a bad clog in my kitchen sink last week, in fact the odour coming up from the sink smelled like something died. I went to Canadian Tire I bought a bottle that cost 15$ that unclogs better than drain o its a 3 day treatment you need to open windows this stuff is strong it was green liquid then I bought these yellow slim sticks that after the clog was fixed I put a stick down the pipe and it smelled like lemons. my clog was fixed for 40$
I tried all of this by the way before calling even the orange thing with the teeth.

How much did you end up giving them? (if you don't mind asking).

They allegedly have an A+ BBB rating. I'd lodge a complaint. That's excessive billing.

I don't know what to doooo 😩
Sleep it off and forget about it.

Yes, the experience is unpleasant, but it's not worth all this stress.

Any plumber emergency visit is $500+, so given your situation it's not so crazy. I understand your frustration of paying $700 for a half hour of work though.

Hey, I know another industry where people pay hundreds of dollars for a few minutes of work. Most of these people feel screwed too, lol.

P.S.: perhaps have a few "handy" friends on standby. I know many of us would gladly drop everything and come over to clean your plumbing.

My point is that I didn't ask for an emergency. I asked for a plumber. Would it have been in 2 weeks I would have taken an appointment. I didn't need it today and if they would have been transparent, I would have just found someone else done deal. How many people just give up like this and chalk it up allowing them to continue this type of practice? It's frustrating.

Now for the comparison with sw lol, this guy charge what I charge for 4hrs and I suck your dick on top of it. AND I suck it good lol. I have no choice but to pay a plumber. You do have a choice to pay a sex workers or not. It's a luxury. A plumber is kind of a necessity.

You're 💯 right! They should've been more transparent and upfront. I'm not even trying to justify their behavior.

I'm trying to make sense of it. You called a big company, not some DYI plumber. They charge a premium. With that said, let's do some math:

- vehicle is easily $150-200 charge
- licensed plumber is at least 3 hour pay (for you job, because he wasn't exactly sitting outside of your door) at 50ish dollars an hour is another $150-200
- company has to make a profit, add another $100-200
- add HST on top of all those fees

I'm pretty sure you see where I'm going with this. Is it ridiculous to pay over $700 to have a drain unplugged? Kinda... but I've dealt with plumbing companies before and some charge even more. I've been quoted $1,200+ to flush the drain in commercial space for 1 hour of work plus extras if they have to do more.

All I'm saying is let it go, be happy all your plumbing works and move on. It's a tough pill to swallow, but it could always be worse. Next time, ask for an estimate before ANY work commences. Use this as a learning moment.

How do you get to at least 3 hours pay? Is that an industry standard? The company is in the same city she lives.

A plumber working for a company is getting paid by the hour. Drive to and from is typically 1-2 hours. Once at the location, time to get all the tools and arrive to the jobsite, then time to complete the job, write invoice and get paid. Then time to go back to the truck, put all the tools away. All that assuming that everything goes smoothly, no extra parts have to be purchased or any additional parts/tools be brought from the truck. That's a minimum 3 hours in my book.

So that would make the price she was quoted seem reasonable, assuming you've given an accurate representation of the market/job practice. At that point, it's probably best to cut the company's profit out and communicate directly with the licensed plumber, once you have someone you can trust.
