I have this table top its around 8ft by 4ft. The problem is its too heavy for two people to carry and a bit awkward. How can I break it down? It appears to be two pieces of particle board each with a thin metal lining and in between the two boards sort of a cardboard filler. Its too much to saw. I tried hammering it but that is not an easy way. I just want to get it outside without having to hire someone to move it.

Get two more people.

Not kidding here. Grab some neighbours and offer up a beer.

Also maybe if you take off the metal lining then the whole thing will seperate.

The object is odd shaped and hard to handle. Make a rope loop with a 8 ft long piece of rope and slip it under the board at one end. Screw or nail the rope to the board so that you have a loop handle on each side. Do this at both ends so that two people can inch it out of the house. Or you can get 4 people and the rope loops will make it easy to move it out.

Look for a groupon or dealfind deal for 1-800-got-junk. I bought one to get rid of an old 50 inch projection TV out of my basement. I think I paid $29, which was well worth it to me. You'd be surprised what these people can move. It might seem too heavy or awkward for you, but a lot of times, it's technique.

Also check around the house. They remove everything. You might have enough stuff to get rid of to justify a purge.

I do one every so often. Used to be easier when I was moving every 5 years or so but now that I bought the house for keeps I have to watch for the clutter.

...or go to Home Depot or Stephenson's, rent a quick cut and reduce it into smaller pieces.

If you are not concerned about getting it out in 1 piece, get yourself a reciprocating saw with a demolition blade (one that is meant for both wood and metal) and cut it up into as many sections as you need.

Cheers

If you can screw in a piece of 2x4 on both sides and at both ends, you would have a hand hold to lug it out with two people. You can also drill a hole in it and stick a piece of broom handle through at both ends to grab on to.

I liked the hammer it down solution.

But you'll have to post the vid later.

I imagine the board has a thin plate of metal imbedded within it, that's the part that makes it extremely heavy and difficult to cut.
I dealt with a sheet that was only 4 by 4 feet and it was very difficult for two of us to carry down stairs.

Put an ad on kijiiji & craigslist offering the item for free to anyone who's willing to get it out of there themselves.

No matter how old or useless it may seem to you, if it costs next to nothing or is free, sooner or later some guy will show up with his cousin, brother & brother-in-law in some 1999 Caravan to haul it away.

That's what I thought with my old 50 inch big screen. Put it on kijiji for free to whoever wanted to carry it out of the basement. One response asking if it was HD or not, and that was it.

Slide a blanket you don't care about underneath it and slide it out on its side.
That's one of the techniques for moving pianos.
