Natives do not pay taxes?

I went to buy some items in mississuaga and my bill was comparable to the lady in front of me that looked like white. She pulled out a card and paid not taxes.

I realize that natives get priority when applying to colleges and universities and receive public assistance. I also knew at some level they did not pay federal taxes but seeing it when I just paid a ton of taxes I was not at all happy someone else is getting a free pass just because of their ethnic background.

I realize that. As I noted this women looked totally white with no Native ethnic tones in her. I am assuming she is part native, perhaps 1/8 or less. Does anyone know what the pre-requisite % is needed to be considered native?

Canada did not exist when diseases that the Europeans brought over killed off the majority of the natives. The natives would be better off we stopped treating them like children.

I recently saw a documentary on First Nations youths joining the Canadian military. It is their escape from the reserve and they also get the opportunity to learn a trade. They are not tax-exempt if they live off the reserve. Of course, we know about the Mohawks and their legendary skills in building skyscrapers.

I believe they do not pay PST, but they still pay GST.

Thay are only exempt from the PST, they have to pay GST still. Government officials like foreign diplomats are also exept from the PST and they can claim GST later. When the HST comes into place that may change everything for the natives.

This thread is not about contributions by or burden of native Indians.

Seems like a lot of you are not aware of section 87 of the Indian Act.

Lots of "white" people are native Indians, whether by blood or by marriage before 1985.

OP, you did not get any elementary school lessons on Canadian history, did you? Or did you get a "free pass" when you took the citizenship exam?

Well, no. If you want to make an argument, then it would be that some previous generation of "Canadians" claimed land that had also been claimed by a previous generation of Native Canadian-Americans.

But if that's the entirety of your argument, then why don't generations of occupancy by "white" Canadians count?

Don't get me wrong: there is more to the payments to those who claim Native Status than what is being argued in this thread. But let's not confuse facts with some sort of guilt complex.
