If it's dance, techno, and house that you're looking for, then try Soulseek.

www.slsknet.org

It's free, no spyware, no adware, none of the crap associated with other programs. You don't pay for the songs (yes, I know you stated that you don't mind paying), but you can't beat it for the selection. I'm a pretty big house and techno fan and I don't have any problems finding what I want.

PM me and I'll fire over my username so you can take a look at what I got
Yes but I'm worried about viruses. I have the latest virus software but what if 1 sneeks in and my hard drive is ruined.
It's a real concern.

I'll tell you another problem I have with these file sharing sites. An artist works his tail off and comes up with a decent album, and instead of being renumerated they are IMHO ripped off through what some people call legitimate "borrowing".

I'm sorry but there's something not right about that.

shareaza

Recently switched to shareaza from kazalite, I would run a ad-aware after using kaza lite and would find all sorts of spyware shit everyday, Shareaza is much better as I find none when I do my scans every week.
The only problem i have had is that songs I want show up in searrches but they don't always download even after a few days.
I think more people will get on and then it will achive a more efficient critical mass.

Someone stated earlier that with MP3s, the chances of virri (I think that's the proper plural) is minimal. If you get into downloading programs, then that can be a bit of a problem.

I've been using SoulSeek for a long time now (since before Audiogalaxy went down), and in the entire time I've used it there's only been one case where users have had to be worried about a virus. MyDoom was running around the network, but it wasn't a huge outbreak. I would say that out of the major filesharing programs, it's the one where you have to worry the least about getting a virus.

A couple of takes on it

1) Read today's Wired, there's an interesting article on filesharing and how bands can actually use it to their advantage.

2) From a personal perspective. Not too long ago, The Chemical Brothers put out "The Golden Path", which featured the lead singer from The Flaming Lips. Now, I'm a HUGE Chemical Brothers fan, and never heard of The Flaming Lips. I heard "The Golden Path", was intrigued, and downloaded a couple of Flaming Lips albums. I loved them, and went out and bought the CDs. The only reason why I did this is because I was able to try the songs out risk free. If I was forced to buy the CD, or pay for the songs at 99 cents a pop, there's no way in hell I would do it. There's a monetary risk involved with trying something that I may or may not like. In this case, I did like it, and I rewarded the artist by purchasing the album. Filesharing doesn't become that bad when you look at it in that light.

And with the type of stuff you're looking for, trust me....it's better to grab it for free since quality of stuff is all over the place unless you truly know what you're looking for.

So when you burn your CD's with downloaded music from file-sharing websites, is the quality equal or close to what you buy in the store???

Lets put it this way....it's good enough for me in my car. MP3s, by nature, are inferior in quality than CDs (unless you get something with a really high bit rate, which is very rare). But unless you're really picky, it's not that big of a deal.

Pretty close, depending on the bit rate. I'd say, 192 and above is good.

Hey Sam,

Sorry I wasn't on the TERB board for a few days and so just got your message.

There's an age disparity between us (I'm Asian, 61 but looks late 40s), had a Jewish girlfriend for a few years, love movies, walks briskly 2Kms a day, dances everyday (I've taught thousands of people to do 13 partner dances-like salsa, cha cha, etc- in the age group 16-80).

I have a lot of formal education (3 Canadian university degrees), work as a trainer / part time faculty member for Ontario's largest college, very worldly, articulate, dresses well.

Frankly, Sam, the age chasm doesn't matter. What matters is that you can have me as a wingman for support and for conversation as you go out to places where ladies hang. While you target the 20s and 30s ladies, I target mainly the 40s and 50s ladies. Also, we can share ideas, esp. the ones I've learned (Note: not referring to pickup lines which are artificial contrivances; what I've learned covers inner game in a fundamental way (development of character, figuring out ladies' personality types as a way to connect with them in a deep way and create attraction, establishing boundaries with women and so stirring attraction, games with women so men can have a good time instead of getting nervous and worked up around women, etc).
