I'm definitely in the minority La vita e bella sucked.

For a better perspective on the Italian viewpoint of WW II watch Pasqualino's Settebellezze. Classic black comedy.

Taxi made a lot of money in Europe. The Hollywood version bombed - a complete failure to understand french humour.

One of the greatest performances by an actress period, Marion Cotillard as Edith Piaf in La Mome (La Vie en Rose in North America)

The besotted Christopher Nolan used this song in Inception.

"Life Is Beautiful" is my top choice.

Honourable mention:

"Das Boot" - 1981 - amazing German WW II U-boat film. IMDB rating 8.5/10

Irreversible - 2002 - Roger Ebert gave it 4 stars, but said "so violent and cruel that most people will find it unwatchable." IMDB rating 7.4/10

La Grande Bouffe - 1973 - a great and humorous food and male psyche movie, with Marcello Mastroianni. IMDB rating 7.3/10

Malizia - 1973 - starring Laura Antonelli. To me she was the most beautiful and sensuous woman in the world in that era. IMDB rating only 6.5/10, but who cares? If you watch that and enjoy her, try to find "How Funny Can Sex Be?". Also 1973. Just for her!

Ah shoot, who can forget Das Boot. Thanks for mentioning it. I bought an anniversary DVD. I like when the U-Boat captain would commend his valiant crew after successfully repairing or doing the impossible.

"Gut"......"Gut".

Winner of the 1998 Oscar for Foreign Language Film, 'Babette's Feast' is an elegant and subtle ode to Charity and the memories that shape your life...

...written by Isak Denisen (the male nome de plume of the character Meryl Streep played in 'Out of Africa') and a joy to behold.

1992 Cesar and Oscar Best Film winner, "Indochine", a great lush, romantic and operatic cinema opus from Regis Wargnier...

...it also showcases the Talent and Beauty of one, Catherine Deneuve, a true Grande Dame of cinema if ever there was one!

"Three Times"...

...three films in one and you decide which is your favourite. I'm partial to the second 'silent' sequence.

The stunning Isabelle Adjani tears up the screen in a monumental performance...

...'Camille Claudel' is as beautiful as her own sculpted work.

Of all of Memo's films, I have to say that "The Devil's Backbone" is my favourite...

...now, if you believe in ghosts....well then!

There are 3 that came out in the last 5 years or so that I really love:
1.The Secret In Their Eyes. An Argentinean crime thriller with a great twist ending. The soccer stadium scene is one of the most amazingly-shot scenes ever.
2.The Lives of Others, A German film set in the Stasi-controlled era in East Germany, with a brilliant performance by Ulrich Muhe, who died shortly after filming.
3. Let The Right One In. Normally I don't like vampire movies, but this Swedish one is more about adolescent alienation and longing for affection. The American remake was not bad but lacked this one's heart.
Just love #2. It's in rotation on Hollywood Suite right now. The lead actor Sebastian Koch was in another one I saw on TVO. 'The Black Book'. WW2 setting. The lead actress Carice van Houten was hot; lots of nudity, sex, but the story was really great. She's is now in Game of Thrones I believe.

#3 is awesome. The American version is good too but not as good as the original. The actress in the US version Chloe Moretz is going to be a star.

Also, after I saw this thread I watched Cani Arriabiati on Youtube. Read up on the director, etc. Mario Bava. Will try and see some more of his stuff. Like his story.

Great film. Fuck I love the internet.

Love it! Adele Exarchopoulous, IMHO, is the world's sexiest woman. She was 19 when she shot the film - holy shit! AE > Jennifer Lawrence.
