I believe that the Ford Contour had two possible engines a 2.0 L Zetec I4 or a 2.5 L Duratec V6.

The four cylinder 2.0 is not, but the six cylinder 2.5 is an interference engine.

Now this is just me grabbing info very quickly, between listening to Mr. Draper’s posts in the classical music thread, and my partaking of a few drams of my namesake, so there could be unintentional errors.

I suspect it is the serpetine belt. Brakage of the timing belt is repairable, some new valves, and guides etc etc. cheaper to get a good used engine.

I'd get the car out of that shop YESTERDAY unless they have promised in front of witnesses to make the car right at no further cost to you.

Either they are honest but hoplessly incomopetent, or they tried on purpose to sabotage your car for extra work.

Belt & Tensioner is an easy beginner's level job - the auto repair equivalent of making scrambled eggs or Swifer'ing the kitchen floor - if they also sell beaters from their shop, beware of the possible agenda of scaring you with a high repair quote into abandoning the car and buying one of theirs for about the same money (they would then repair your car at their liesure and try to sell it for another $1500-$2000 to the next person ...)

Other than the initial 630 and the towing charges I have no given them another dime, nor will I. My friend is willing to take it to small claims court if they do not make right the damage they have done.

So,,,,,,to recap and update the continuing saga of Ty and her cursed vehicles........Wed, car dies,,gets towed to shop,,,,,Thurs pick up car, it dies on highway, towed back to the shop....Fri, pick up car,,,again,,,,it dies on highway,,,,again,,,,towed back to shop. Sat pick up loaner car....IT DIES yes, seriously, the loaner car crapped out on me. After giving it a look see it is filled with broken glass in the rear on the floor, the window does not seal and it CRAPS OUT ON ME......I am CURSED. So, after my friend drops me off at the shop to pick it up The fricking *%^#^^^%*(&*&# Bitch tries to tell me that this is all MY fault because I did not tell them to change the seals when they did the belts the first time round. O>M>F>G> Is she SERIOUS???????? She waits till my friend is gone before trying that crap of course cause she knows goddamn well he would have torn a strip off her if she had tried it with him. They told us the seals were FINE for F*CKS SAKE If they had said the seals could go then for goddamn sure we would have told them to change them. She gives me this "What Have We Learned" speech in this condescending tone that just makes my hackles rise.........my jaw is aching from trying to keep my mouth shut and not scream at her. AaAAaRRRRGGGGHHHH
sigh
o.k. I am done ranting and raving. sigh I got home safe this time, a little nervous about the next time I need my car though let me tell you.

I would agree with these comments. Google your car's make model and engine along with the term "interference engine" and you can probably find out for yourself.
Wow, I wish I had looked into what an interference engine was before we bought our Mazda. What a piece of junk that engine (really a Ford engine) has turned out to be in our car. Of course the engine might be better than dealing with Mazda's customer warranty service.

A really minor problem in an interference engine can just toast the entire thing. First thing I googled said that 80 years ago engine builders knew interference engines where a bad idea.
