My puppy (3 months old) seems to have an eye infection and its all swollen - he keeps scratching it and crying... I can't get in to see my vet for the next few days...

Any suggestions from dog-lovers to ease my baby's discomfort?

Simple saline solution will help ease the pain on a temporary basis.

But I would suggest an Emergency vet

I agree with papasmerf go to an emergency vet, early diagnosis of serious problems can mean the difference between easy treatment and your dog losing its sight.

Is the dogs eye dry and irritated or is there discharge. Is the discharge clear or coloured and opaque. If the irritation is caused by something in the eye, ie dirt then a good washing with saline might remove the irritant and solve the problem. Is the eye dry and irritated then it could be kerato conjunctivitis sicca caused by inadequate tear production. Opaque discharge then perhaps it is an infection and your dog need antibiotic drops.

Poor Pup!
Listen, honey, you can go to any drug store and grab something called OCULAR POLYSPORIN...you know polysporin for like cuts and shit? Well, this stuff is in a much smaller tube, ask the pharmacist for it, and DON'T tell him or her what it's for: They always lay some shit on you like, "oh, no non no...it's NOT for animals..." TRUST ME, that's BULLSHIT. I have used this simple, gentle antibiotic eye and ear cream with GREAT, almost instant success with my guninea pigs, my cat, my dog...TRUST me, this will make your baby feel better ...it even has this totally tiny nipple on it, it comes out smooth so you can feed it right easy into the groove of his eye. He'll be fine in a few days.
Saline is good too, just to flush it out. Sarah
PS DO this, and always keep some on hand for any eye irritation. It's a miracle. OCULAR POLYSPORIN!!!

there is a 24hr emergency vet clinic at Burnhamthorpe and Wolfedale in Mississauga.
A place I don't want to visit for a long time. I had to take my dog there a few weeks ago to end her life :(
You could tie him to your bumper and go for a drive. I am sure he would quickly forget about the discomfort that his eye was causing him!!!
WhOiSyOdAdDy? I know your just trying to be funny but personally.......... I don't think it's very funny at all.

Salines good but personally I wouldn't use anything with antibiotics until you get a diagnosis of what the problem is. It may not even be an infection.

He's gonna be fine...

VB took Pixel (he's a toy chi hua hua) to the vet this morning. Took two shots and got some stuff for his eyes. Apparently, it was an alergic reaction to something he might have eaten. Gonna have to monitor his diet...

The poor thing looks so helpless with the cone protector thing on his neck. He's so tiny, he can barely hold his head up. lol

Hello again,
I agree that antibiotics shouldn't be abused, but SERIOUSLY...antibiotic, schmantibiotic...it clears up the eye virtually immediately. If it's oozing, it's an infection. Trust me, this stuff works. S

Good dog

Glad the pup is OK.

I've spent more on my babe than I've spent on Sp's.

She was literally getting a tumour every year I had to get removed.

She's now healthy, a little older, but in excellent shape.

I was thinking there was an eye infection there... good thing you went to an after - hours place.

Sticker Shock!

Is there such a thing as OHIP for animals? Damn... $170 for two needles and a tube of ointment that barely holds .5 oz. of fluid! $25 for a walk-in fee and $56 for what they call:Office Call Canine. Go figure? I should've been a vet.

I suppose, in the macro scheme of things that it's a small price to pay considering the warm fuzzy glow the little fella brings into our lives. But talk about sticker shock! Oye vey!

I'd like to thank everyone who voiced their concerns. It was greatly appreciated!

that's for sure.

to have my dog put to sleep and cremated cost me $611.

Worth every penny!
Now I can sprinkle her ashes all over the places she used to love so much! cottage, parks, her daily walk route LOL , and all the other places she used to mark as her territory HaHa.

Eye infection remedies

There is a great herbal solution called Eyebright next time you or your dog has an eye infection. You can get it in an eyebath or take it orally. It works great on pets as well as humans and it's alot cheaper than shots or antibiotics. You can also get it in homeopathic preparations at health food stores that carry homeopathics.

Hard Headed Dog!

never thought of using homeopathic cures for a dog! Have you tried it before?

The swelling on Pixel's eyes is down - he had this chinese eyes things going for a while there - and he isn't crying helplessly anymore...

After I took him to the vet (who said the pup is the biggest suck she's ever seen) I was standing beside a bus shelter waiting for a light to change and people were making googly faces at him in the shelter. So he decides to run towards them, not realizing there was glass between him and them - silly dog. If it weren't for the cone he would have given his head a pretty gook smack. Funny part is he kept walking into the glass, by the third time I picked him up before he did some more damage to himself,
he isn't very bright sometimes.

You know with the cone around his head, you can still take him for that ride VB. If you get a really long leash, I'll bet you could get that little guy airborne at about 45-50 kph. :)
