My nephew is in TO to celebrate end of university. Where to get a celebratory STEAK?

Price is no option. I'm thinking Jacob & Co or Hy's for a celebratory steak tonight. I just want t a place that will give him a good meal that I can get a reservation without any grief for tonight.

A place that serves fresh oysters as an appetizer would be ideal.

Any recommendations? I want a place where the tables are not on top of each other so I can chat with the kid about life.

I've never been myself but lots of folks like Harbor 60 a little more than Ruth Chris and Hy's especially if money is no object.

Don't go to Hy's, one of the worst experiences I've ever had at a steakhouse. My recommendation would be Morton's (Bloor & Avenue).

Harbour 60 is great, but maybe a bit overated. They do have fresh oysters though. I personally prefered the food as well as the ambiance and decor at Jacob & Co.
I would have to say if you were sitting in the restaurant we would certainly enjoy the ambiance a great deal more. We decided on Bymark so feel free to come and liven up the scenery.

You may wish to spell the name of your recommendation correctly - it's Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. Ruth Fertel, owner started the chain by buying a steakhouse called Chris' Steakhouse. While Ruth's Chris is great I like Barbarians because of the way they do steak and because they're in Toronto only - your nephew could have a Ruth's Chris where he lives.
West end Le Castillles Dundas at 427, East end Barcley's on Lawrence 1900 block, DT Barbarians Dundas and Yonge. Ruth Cris is good, but too expensive for what you get.

Oh the hypocrisy! It's Barberian's.

Sorry, man. Couldn't resist. I was at Morton's a few days ago. The meat gets a thumbs up from me, and so do the oysters. As at most steak houses the side dishes were awful, but you don't go there for the veggies. As for Harbour 60, I've never been there and I've seen mixed reviews. What I can tell you is that Harbour 60 is the most overpriced menu I've ever seen. You can eat at any of Toronto's top 10 restaurants (none of which are steak houses by the way) for less. Think Scaramouche, Nota Bene, Cava, Centro, Mistura, Splendido, North 44, c5, Oro. They can all make you a great steak but they can cook veggies and provide a fresh salad too. Harbour 60 is for professional athletes - people who are generally pretty unsophisticated to begin with and now make so many millions per year that they don't care how much they're spending. I've also heard it's popular with underworld types. If I had that kind of money to blow on a single meal it's the last place I'd go. But that's just my opinion. Like I said, I've never been there. I'm sure many people love it.

The Tulip is a great place, but it is not "as good" as Barberian's or Morton's. Not even close.
Its good if you want to spend less money, and it could very well be better quality for the money, but even steven, it is inferior. If you want to wear flipflops, go to the Tulip but the steak is not as good, and lots of people wear jeans to Barberian's.

That being said, I would hate to see the crappy celebrities that wear the clothes I would wear to dinner at Barberians, or Mortons, or Hys for that matter.

Bardi's is another place that is pretty good downtown.

That's the other one I couldn't put my finger on. Great place not far from Barberians

From posts above in this thread:
Ruth's Chris
Hy's
Barberian's
Morton's
Tulip
Harbour 60
Scaramouche
Nota Bene
Cava
Centro
Mistura
Splendido
North 44
c5
Oro

You people live in a different universe from me. I've never been to any of the above. $15 for an appetizer, $50 main course, $50 - $150 for a bottle of wine. And that's just humble ol' Barberian's. I expect some of the others are quite a bit more expensive. So dinner for 2 is easily $400.

Well, whatever makes you happy. hmmm. Does it make you happy? Do share. Is this what brings happiness to your life? Curious minds want to know.
