With this damn heatwave, my condolences to those who does not have an air conditioner. I feel your pain! Just bought a portable last month and it was money well spent.

(I'm one of the people who seems to be melting away in this heat because I don't have air conditioning)

CrappyTire had one on sale for $129. I saw lots of folks with them walking out of the store near my work.

Yeah if you can find one. I remember years ago during a heat wave and I went out all over Toronto looking to buy a fan and no one anywhere had one!!! Then this guy at Home Hardware tried to sell me a heater... telling me that I can use just the fan part... like these heater fans spin very fast! hehehehe

Now that I live in a house I have central air.... but I still have 2 window air conditioner units from when I lived in an apartment... they are 10,000 BTU and 6,000 BTU Someone told me to wait till it's really hot and just put them at the end of your driveway and you could get a good buck for them... maybe I should try it?

I never understand how massive companies can short ship inventory like that. You would think that they would have better distribution systems to ensure they don't miss a single sale.

Remember we are talking about large corporations with shareholders they are accountable to. I remember the last massive heat wave and same thing happened, stores ran out.

I heard that the whole summer is going to be hot like this. Don't know how they predict something like that, but if that is the case I think they will be selling a ton of A/C units this summer.

Try a ceiling or oscillating fan

I don't have an air conditioner in my home and I've spent quite a bit of time visiting the southern states. Most homeowners there still rely on and prefer ceiling fans.

Air conditioners waste electricity and really don't allow you to adapt to the changing seasons.

Yea, if you've got a medical condition, are a senior or live in the heart of the concrete jungle, they are a necessity, but ceiling fans and oscillating fans do a great job for the rest of us at minimal cost.

Not for me

My home faces east/west on the north side with 2 big bay windows.. I get alot of sun. For the air-conditioner to be effective I would have to black out the windows with coverings, curtains or blinds. Why would I want to live in the dark all year around ? Winter will be here soon enough and we'll be living in the cold , leaving for work and coming home in the dark ? I love the summer, why try to create an artificial climate when the extreme heat only lasats a couple weeks. Ceiling fans and oscillationg fans are the way to go.
Now if I could convince the guy next door to put his garbage in the garbage room instead of leaving it on his balconey all week....

There is no magic formula for matching supply to demand. The problem is in the traditional supply chain. It is out of date. Companies like Zellers and Canadian Tire are slaves to legacy business practices, that can't enable timely restocking of large ticket items. Updating to more efficient practices is a costly process, that requires, learning, change, innovation. Some lazy execs would rather sit safely in their ivory towers. This is why Eatons and K Mart didn't survive.

Traditional orders are placed and shipments are planned months in advance of the actual season. Stock has to be secured, orders have to be authenticated, payments have to be verified. After last summers crappy weather, I'm sure there were overstocks and costly returns that overshadowed any lost sales..

The grocery industry was forced to change to survive. The new megas stores are monuments to their success. Wal Mart too. The next wave will be virtual shopping.

Sorry pal..I disagree! Maybe those fortunate types who live within a breath of the sea use fans..But try Arizona, Texas, Nevada, It's hot as hell outside
and damed comfortable inside.

Air Conditioner no more waste electricity then your furnace Wastes gas.
For me to be productive, I have to sleep...For me to sleep It has to be cool.
Simple...
Ontario, has some extreme temps, both winter and Summer...The nice weather really only comes in Spring and FAll.

I moved into a small apartment that faces north, and is in a relatively new building, maybe only ten years old. I thought I might be able to go without air conditioning. Holy crap, was I ever wrong! When the temperature was 33°C outside, I had to go outdoors to cool off, and coming back inside was like stepping into a sauna. Turning on the cold water tap produces warm water for more than a minute before it gets slightly cold. The Nutella in my cupboard became a runny liquid.

My point was not about "surgery", don't you think over $150.00 {I believe it is $189.00+GST) is a little steep to install a window A/C in the GTA that costs between $89~$700?

BTW, I did not have any problems installing my 12000 BTU, I own a drill and had bought the right brackets, screws and drill bit...but what about people with disabilities, etcetera...
