My car got hit by a shopping cart.

Happened to me twice. Once I left a cart on a bit of a sloping walkway, it rolled and hit a parked car. The male 6"5" driver was still in the car.

Another time I was trying to squeeze a cart between two closely parked cars. I hit one of the cars. The male 6'6" driver was still in the car.

Question: Why were these damn drivers still in their car when I hit their car with the cart?

Used to be for $3.00 you could get his name and address from his plate down at the motor vehicles office. That was a long time ago. Probably no longer.
The plate owner is not necessarily the driver in the involved in the incident.
There is the potential for misguided vigilantism or invasions of privacy if plate owners information was public record.

Look into Paintless Dent Repair. This is what a dealership will use for minor dents like hail damage. Cost will probably be less than your deductible. Guys that do this for a living are good at floating the dent out from behind without damaging the paint.
I know how it feels when it is a new vehicle that you take pride in, but todays cars are very thin metal (lots of aluminum) to save weight for fuel economy thresholds. They will dent fairly easily from rocks and general road debris. I got about a year and a half before the leading edge of the hood was dented and also a minor windshield chip. I left both, but the windshield is a greater concern if it spreads as the cost to get one plus installation and camera alignment can easily be above a thousand.
Technology is great until it isn't.

Basically from what I've learned from insurance, if your going to make a small claim, it should be at least in the thousands or it's not worth it. Other than, don't make any claims. It's really there for big shit.

Probably another obvious reason is stalking.

Sorry, I hit your car. I was distracted by that woman with the cart.

(Mall parking lots are like the wild west. They should at least have signs with arrows showing the right direction to go.)

I don't believe its worth pursuing. Chalk it up to unfortunate luck. Shouldn't cost too much to fix the dent/scratch if its minor.

I needed to vent, it's a brand new car and if I go through insurance it will be on record that the car was in an accident.

And I don't have the video, they only showed it to me and we were able to get the license plate number.
Well call your insurance and tell them what happened....some would move mountains to not cough up the cost of your repair....and since you got the license they might look into going after the guy's insurance...that still counts as fleeing from the scene....No?

repairs cost a lot nowadays...it won't be just a touch up...it's repainting the entire panel...

My advice is to smash the shopping cart in revenge and drive to the nearest HPL location.

Have you heard of paintless dent repair (PDR)? They do amazing work and it's much less than repainting an entire panel. If it's a deep scratch, obviously you'll need to repaint it.

On a supermarkets parking lot.

I was shopping and when I came out there was a shopping cart resting against my car's drivers door.

The store has outside cameras and I was able to get them to review the video and got the culprits license plate number.

The guy was parked way away from me but the parking lot slopes down and when he unloaded his shopping into his car the cart started rolling down the parking lot until it hit my car and the guy just drove off.

The damage is minor, a small dent and a small scratch but it's a brand new car, just picked it up 3 weeks ago.

Any advice gents, has anybody ever had similar incident?
That sucks man….Shitty even if the car was not new.

Go through your insurance. Call the police and have them review the video. You will have the guys name and address pretty quick. You insurance company may go after him for any money they pay out to touch up the damage.

Thanks ladies and gents!

paintless dent repair (PDR) is probably best option

I don't think it's worth going through insurance

The only regret will be letting the ahole who did it off the hook

Besides the lost appreciation issues of new cars, this is another reason I buy used.

Sorry this happened
So the old goldfish bowl still going, eh?
