McGilll is the best known Canadian university in the U.S. My daughter went there years ago and a popular hoodie said "Harvard. America's McGill."

One reason is the lower drinking age in Quebec. (18 versus 21 in the U.S..) I talked to my daughter about the availability of fake IDs in Quebec and she said, "All you need is an ID with a picture of someone the same sex as you." It was also one of the first universities to have co-ed residences. That may have something to do with it.

I realize there's an issue about tuition in Quebec and I have no idea what it is now, but when she was there, it was unbelievable cheaper than in the States. Yearly tuition was less than for a semester in some the well-respected U.S. universities of equivalent reputation (Duke, Georgetown).

I really enjoyed my time at McGill. There are a few McGill graduates on this Board. I know the Prince is one of them.

When I attended McGill, the bars and strip clubs close at 3PM (Typo: should read 3AM). Many were the times I came home (often not alone) at 4AM.

Question: Did your daughter mention anything about the Reservoir?

BTW: Some foreign students actually like the French fact in Quebec.

Not sure when your daughter went but it has certainly lost a lot of its luster in the last several years. The children of a number of friends from Ontario went there and at least half of them transferred back to Ontario or went to the US after first year. Montreal is an amazing city and great place for students to live but the school is not what it used to be. Regrettable and sad.

Whew! I attended McGill when it was still the best university in the world. Sorry to hear that it has declined in recent years.

U of T is also a very good school. I spent a year there to get credit for some courses.

No, she didn't. But then I bet there were a lot of things she didn't tell me about lol.

She returned here after her second year. She actually worked to pay for her entire post-secondary education and found living in Montreal and covering tuition too expensive.

I preceded your daughter by many years. But, I found rent and cost of living generally cheaper in Montreal than Toronto (not sure about now).

After my first year, I befriended a student from Singapore and moved into his apartment. My bedroom was his former study room.

BTW: On the subject of universities, I heard that Queen's is deep in debt and might go bankrupt.

I am not aware of queens financial condition but it is a great institution. In many ways the best in Canada. Its law school and business schools are second to none in Canada as r the world.

I have a Queen's story. Yeah, yeah, I know this is a McGill thread.

A friend told me her daughter was awarded a full hockey scholarship to the University of Minnesota. Mom wouldn't allow her 18 year old daughter to go so far away from home. In the end, the daughter was awarded a partial hockey scholarship to Queen's.

Montréal in January seemed dark all the time (visited a mate there and then) remember big beer bottles and late night smoked meat sandwiches...

Toronto seems dark in January too. Yeah, I miss the smoked meat sandwiches.

I also miss walking from my apartment in lower Westmount, through Alexis Nihon Plaza underground and surfacing just across the street from the old Montreal Forum. Of course, there were always the annual Stanley Cup parade.
