I was talking to a friend recently about places we have been to and places that we must see. These do not have to be super exotic or far away. The two places I have been to that are quite interesting are The Winchester House in California, built by ]the widow of the man who started the Winchester Arms Company. She was affraid of the ghost of all the men that Winchester guns have killed, so she kept building houses around her house till she died.

The other amazing place is Mamouth Caves Kentucky. A Cave where you can walk under ground for 16 miles. There are water falls and lakes in the cave. There is even blind catfish in the underground lakes.

Take a drive on I-70, west of Denver. The highway winds through the White River National Forest, where it is built into the side of a canyon. Amazing views!

This last 12 months I had 2 women that wanted to go on vacation with me, they both wanted to go lay on some beach. I am not a beach guy. I have to do and see things. Two years ago I was in Scotland, I went on the Glenmorangie Whisky Distillery tour. It was quit interesting. I am not a big drinker, I total 15 to 20 drinks a year. So I drink only the good stuff, because the rotgut might kill me.

I have also been on winery tours in the Napa Valley in California. I know nothing about wine, except that I know what I like. The California wine valley for me is more of a eating tour because most of the wineries also have a restaurant / hotel component to them.

Yes, it is humbling. Once the locals know that you are Canadian, they treat you different there. I got the same special treatment in Belgium.

On your way to or from Vancouver Island, which rubby has correctly identified as a Canadian must-see, do the Banff-Jasper drive. Mountainous beauty beyond belief, right here in Canada. If you can swing Yellowstone Park and Mount Rushmore while you're out West, you will be glad you did. The paint pots and salt walls in Yellowstone make you think you are on another planet.

Grand Canyon is also a must see. While there, take the fixed-wing flight over the chasm. En route, be sure to stop in Las Vegas for at least a night, to see the lights.

New York City is a world unto its own.

Just north of Kansas City, you can go into the house where Jesse James was killed. They have even preserved the hole in the wall made from the bullet (supposedly) passing through his head while he was straightening a picture.

ps. I assume you've already seen Niagara Falls, the Thousand Island, and Quebec City, all easy weekend trips from Toronto.

Further afield: Dubrovnik, Istanbul, Prague, Stonehenge, Paris and/or Rome, Kruger Park (South Africa), any major Middle Eastern capital, Petra, any sleepy non-touristy Mediterranean coastal town, Lourdes, New Orleans, etc.

Befriend people in foreign countries and try to arrange to stay with them in their homes. Tourist attractions.. meh. Seeing how people really live--eye opening to see the ways in which even though we're all the same, we go about it in such different ways.

I visited Egypt and saw the pyramids and all that crap once and found it overall kind of boring, then another time I had the opportunity to stay in the home of an Egyptian family, eat their home cooked food, and go around with them to their favorite restaurants, visit with friends, and so on. Wow. Guess which trip was more memorable?

I've been able to do the same thing in a number of countries, in Japan, in China, in Mexico, and various places in Europe. I offer my home to others who visit here to reciprocate. I am fortunate that my job puts me in touch with people around the world, and this is one of the key interests I share with my wife--who is very outgoing, and makes these connections too--and so I have the opportunity to develop these friendships sometimes, and I never miss the opportunity to spend time with local people and see how they really live.

If your job doesn't put you in touch with people this way then try and mingle and befriend locals in your ordinary tourist travels. Just try and make friends. It is so much better to have those human connections to the places you visit. Much more interesting than dead cold stone monuments. Toronto's got immigrants from pretty much anywhere so you can also network through your local friends. Plan your trips based on where you have local friends who have family back in the old country. Got a friend from Columbia or Greece or China? Drop hints that you'd like to visit people when you go their country, and often they'll be more than happy to hook you up.

I even used to do this even when I was a kid. My school organized some trip to Europe, bunch of us who could afford it flew over on some sort of history oriented tour of some European cities, chapperoned by the school history teacher. My friend and I ditched the school tour and went off to party with a bunch of local kids. Caught so much shit for leaving the group and giving our guides a heart attack (I was 16, they thought I'd got lost) but really one of the best times of my life.

The fact that it never even crossed your mind that you can reciprocate, and be as generous as a guest as your host is with you, really doesn't surprise me. I mean, I view that as fundamental to the notion of treating someone as a friend, but I guess you just go through life assuming the only way to do things is to take without giving back.
