Except that the racist was just pretending to be a racist. While the puncher was most definitely not pretending to be the kind of guy that punches strangers for the sounds that come out of their mouth holes.

Mind you, the "racist" was definitely an asshole for pulling a shitty prank that has been done and filmed a thousand times before. Let's agree that they are both assholes.
I won't concede that they're both assholes and sweep it under the rug like that.
It would be rationalizing the motivations and the behavioral context of each person on the same moral level, and I don't agree that that's the case.
And you are assuming that the puncher is the " kind of guy that punches strangers for the sounds that come out of their mouth holes."
How do you come to that definitive conclusion. Maybe he is, maybe he isn't. You have no way of knowing.
Would anyone here accuse Buzz Aldrin of being that type of guy?
I'm judging him on his reaction to a persistent racial assault. And I laud him for that.
Btw, reducing verbal racial assault to something as benign as mere "sounds that come out of their mouth...", I think is a little thoughtless.

We should care if we all want a better world for everybody. For example, there are people who protest the hanging of gay men in Iran, even though it is "over there".
Let me know how things go at the next protest, I'm sure they will appreciate your support.

Growing up in Hamilton, and now living in Toronto, I can assure you that Hamilton is a far tougher town. I always laugh when people in Toronto think an area of town in "tough" and I think back to my youth in Hamilton. I had a GF once who thought that Queen and Leslie (in Toronto) was a bad neighbourhood and didn't like going there and I used to say to her, "try the north west end of Hamilton, or Parkdale on for size".
I believe it. I grew up in a tough crowd, and could see some of the signs coming in the video. I don't think the average filmographer from Toronto or Mississauga would have a clue. Deep down I relate to the Hamilton guys.

Oh, absolutey. They are different flavours of asshole. One is tangier, with a soupcon of violence. The other has a hint of sanctimony and, I think, cardamom.

And you are assuming that the puncher is the " kind of guy that punches strangers for the sounds that come out of their mouth holes."

By the not entirely ignorable fact that he punched a stranger for the sounds that were coming out of his mouth hole. It might be a leap of faith, but I'm assuming that wasn't CGI special effects we were watching there.

Maybe he is, maybe he isn't. You have no way of knowing.
Other than the fact that we have a video of him punching someone for the sounds coming out of his mouth hole, you're absolutely right.

Would anyone here accuse Buzz Aldrin of being that type of guy?
Absolutely. Of course, we're willing to give him more of a pass because he's of a different generation. I don't think we'd find it as cheer-worthy if, say, Chris Hadfield clocked some moon landing truther.

I'm judging him on his reaction to a persistent racial assault. And I laud him for that.

Perhaps. But not as thoughtless as punching someone for the sounds that come out of their mouth hole.

I get the feeling you've been punched for the sounds that come out of your mouth hole before.

Internet tough guys often offer, or at least imply that I gots some coming. But in real life where my mouth hole is in the proximity of fists? Never in my life. Why? Cause I'm nice, dammit. People love me, motherfucker!
