Song was written by canadian Robbie Robertson of The Band who IMO is the best canadian rock guitarist ever and sung by lead singer Levon Helm who died a year or so ago. I saw them many years ago at the old Concord Tavern on Bloor street. They were also a backup band for Rompin Ronnie Hawkins. Again, many years ago.

Yes truly a great song. Lightfoot is a Canadian Icon. The saddest song I have ever heard was Written and sung by Gordon Lightfoot. The Last Time I Saw Her Face. It was about his mother who died at a young age. If anyone has lost a loved one especially at a young age and listened to his recording of this song and did not shed some tears, then they are not human.
Still prefer the original, amazing song.
And he is still alive and singing, although he looks over 90. Never had a great voice but wrote many great songs with great lyrics but I think his best song was Me And Bobby McGee written by Kris Kristofferson.Yes truly a great song. Lightfoot is a Canadian Icon.
I saw Ronnie Hawkins at the old Crang Plaza on Jane and Wilson, in the late 50s, on a Sunday and no booze. His best back then, Forty Days and Bo Diddley.Yeah I saw Rompin Ronnie Many times . Great Bands !
I saw Ronnie many times in Toronto and Peterborough bars. He loved playing close to his home on Stony Lake.I saw Ronnie Hawkins at the old Crang Plaza on Jane and Wilson, in the late 50s, on a Sunday and no booze. His best back then, Forty Days and Bo Diddley.
It would be hard to argue that this is not the greatest rock song ever written.
