Here are a few...

John McLaughlin - any records with Trilok Gurtu on perscussion, there is also a live one thats good as well.

Chick Corea Acoustic and Electric Band - The original lineup that includes Dave Weckl on drums and John Pattitucci on bass, not the other line up.

John Scofield - with Dennis Chambers on drums.

If your going 70s, don't forget about Return to Forever and Mahavishnu Orchestra.

I'm looking for some *instrumental only* fairly modern jazz type stuff with lots of percussion. Also i'm only looking for upbeat stuff, nothing sad and whiny...
1st thing that came to my mind, (I second Guy Lafleur's recommendation):

St. Germain - "Tourist"

Thanks !

Seeing as we're also going back in time to get modern jazz, we might as well get into the Soft Machine

Jazz

If you enjoy Jazz while getting a good massage, try Diamond spa in Scarborough. Do a search in the MP section. Ok, shill.

I don't get kick back but the occasional punch on the shoulder as MPA mistaken me for other Terbs that gave bad reviews.

Give these a shot:

Mahavishnu Orchestra
Al DiMeola
Chic Corea
Stanley Clarke
Stanley Jordan
Steve Vai (not jazz, just really weird)
Weather Report

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Since I heard St Germain it's been driving me nuts coz they have an element at times that reminded me of someone else ... who that was has been a task and a half to figure out ... but it hit me today ! ... Morphine ! ... while they have a definite jazzy edge they don't really fit into this thread, however I'd recommend 'cure for pain' ... they have a slight Tom Waits edge to them as well.
