so I also have a question can you only use these in a computer
or am I doing something wrong?
You need to convert mp3 to .wav files.
"DELL jukebox" which you can also probably get in limewire, can do this for you.
Once you've made your own CD you can hardly tell the
difference in quality between a store-bought and homemade.
Its that good

Unless your CD player specifically says it also plays MP3's.

Now that I am self-employed I probably put in 10 - 20 hrs a week that I'm not paid for.
How do you measure that? The more you work the more money you make when you are self-employed. Nobody is paying you.

Not strange at all. It's for the same reason that cops focus their efforts on the drug dealers and NOT the buyers of the product.

Just the same, here's CRIA's take on the issue (Canadian Recording Industry Association):
The record companies got airplay in their pockets. Where can an independent band go to a radio station and ask them to play their songs? Most radio stations won't do it because of payola. So the only way to break out is to sign with a label. Not fair in my mind.

Barenaked Ladies put a tape together in the late 80s, unsigned. CFNY played it and the rest is history. Why can't radio stations be more open to unsigned artists, nobody wants to listen to top 40 crap anyway.

The music industry is like any other. It is a business. Like any other business, an investment is required if you plan on being an entrepreneur. It amuses me to no end that people assume artists should be catered to and bankrolled for their product.

A band or artist doesn't have to depend upon a record company to launch their music. That is a myth. And if payola is alive and well as most of the public would presume, then anyone's money is fair game. Including that of an indie artist. Still a free market society in my mind.

If artists today took charge of their work, spent the money to develop it, and performed tirelessly, they too can make it. It's simply positioning themselves to look attractive to the majors.

Record companies today require saavy artists who understand that this is indeed a business.

No one would expect a distributor to support a retail store wih development funding no matter how unique the operation is. Same holds true in the music biz. No label worth their salt would support or sign an artist that couldn't support themselves.

That is a classic example of a business saavy act that took charge of their product and toured endlessly to promote it. Radio will always support that kind of effort. They got played on the air simply because their product was available to the station's listeners. It was being sold as indie product in major music retail stores.

Not only did they have the chutzpah to record, package and release it (all with their own money), they weren't afraid to give it away on consignment.

Why would a radio sration play a product that wasn't readily available to the public? It wouldn't make business sense.

Ditto for a record label. They would never sign an act that didn't have at least a substantial local following.

The reason why there is such a dearth of quality 'indie' product comes down to the fact that artists expect to be coddled. If more took charge of their art, you'd see and hear a hell of a lot more.

Conversely speaking, labels need to hedge their bets and unfortunately will gravitate towards artists that have a wide demographic. Sadly, that group is the 20 and under crowd that likes their pablum pop.

So, until artists far and wide take charge and develop their product on a grassroots level, you're gonna hear more Madonna's, Britney's and Celine's before you hear anything of substance.

It may not be fair that record companies have more cash (along with connections) to play with but just the same, Joe's Garage is competing with Speedy Muffler and doing just fine. And he ain't getting any government handouts in the form of Can-Con reg's and the like.

There are tons of sites and hubs that you can DL anything from music, software, TV shows, and so on. The most popular downloaders are Bit Torrent and DC++. As always be cautious in your DLing, I always virus check everything I have DL'd before opening it.

I hope the day will come when I can select streaming music wherever I am, car, shopping, etc... And I can wirelessly select from the net what I want to listen to. If I like the song I can download and store it in seconds in the same instance for 50 cents. That download would come from the band's website. 45 cents would go the artist and 5 cents to the streamer.

Thankfully, it would appear that the industry is moving in that direction. Artists are beginning to wake up and see the opportunities for what they are. The saavy will survive if not thrive in this new paradigm.

MP3 files are compressed data, not executable system code. This means that they cannot deliver a virus to your system without a serious flaw in the player software. (Eg, the player software executing code within the file because of some form of buffer overrun attack, etc) As I said, highly unlikely, as the player is more likely to see the file as a corrupted or invalid mp3 file and not play it.

That being said, it is more likely that you actually downloaded a file called "songname.mp3.exe" or .com or .pif, etc. This tactic fools some people who don't know the difference between one filetype and another. When you click on the file to "play" it, it will do some nasties to your system, as you are actually running a software program, not playing a mp3.

Most P2P applications offer search filtering for file types. You should always use the "Audio" filter if you don't know how to tell the file types apart. This will filter out the nasties.

In addition, the recording companies are double dipping in that any recordable media sold in Canada has a royalty surtax atatched to the selling price. This tax is collected for compensation for lost revenue by the recording industry. What a country!

No computer geek pirate uses P2P software anymore... so skip the Limewire, EDonkey, WinMX, Kazaa, etc... it's all about the BIT-TORRENTS now-a-days.

Do a search on TORRENTS and you'll see... you'll need to dl a bit-torrent program first (like Bit Comet) and then find a torrent search site to find the files you wanna download.

Pirate Bay is prolly the highest profile site.
