This disease is so intriguing to learn about.

Munchausen syndrome by proxy is a mental illness and a form of child abuse. The caretaker of a child, most often a mother, either makes up fake symptoms or causes real symptoms to make it look like the child is sick.
  • Is a parent or caregiver—usually a mother.
  • Often a woman between the ages of 20 and 40.
  • Might be a healthcare professional.
  • Acts very friendly and cooperative with healthcare providers.
  • Appears very concerned about their child's health.

I was just reading about this latest case;

How do the doctors not also get charged or reprimanded though? Putting a child through unnecessary surgeries is criminal in my opinion.

Mom gets to shop around. She keeps going to different doctors with slightly different stories until she gets what she wants. Bingo, she will get one that is more interested in that procedure enabling a few vacation condo payments than how sick anyone really is...

But put yourself in the docs' white, rubber-soled shoes. A nice lady comes to your office with a list of symptoms that add up to a serious disease. You want to help and the state board of medicine will kick your ass if you don't. So you send the wretched kid for tests. The tests come back negative. So now you have to decide if the tests were done incorrectly or whether the nice lady is making shit up and either way, you may be chatting to the state board of medicine. So you send the kid for more tests. Or maybe there's a science journal piece somewhere about how tests are not necessarily accurate and reliable with this illness and you slice the kid open anyway because it's the professionally safe choice.
