OK, let me break it down for you. As someone mentioned in this thread, virtually all media is owned by corporations. So, most media outlets tend to be fairly conservative. Note, I'm not saying right-wing. But, the mainstream ones are centrist. Even the Toronto Star (affectionately called the Red Star by PCs) is fairly centrist though left-leaning.
Journalists who lie eventually get caught. There have been many examples of this happening. Sometimes this goes on for years, other times it is caught fairly quickly. But, in MSM, when it does happen, they let it be known. They don't try to cover it up. People lose their jobs. These channels and papers know they need credibility to attract viewers/readers. In many newsrooms they have fact checkers to ensure the accuracy of their reporting. In some places they even will check the colour of someones shirt if it's mentioned in the story. But, as advertising and subscription dollars dry up, newsrooms cut back on these types of positions.
Now, the Right wing media doesn't do much of this. Breitbart has no journalistic ethics or standards. They have pumped out some scoops, but frequently they report on innuendo and not facts. Or they amp up negative stories for Biden while spinning bad stories about the GOP.
Over the past five years there has been an consistent effort by Trump and the right to discredit the media. Trump knew that most of his followers were Fox watchers, and he knew Fox had his back. So, he slams the MSM with tons of falsehoods and lies. When these rubes switch from Fox to say, CBS, they don't see the Fox type stories....so they think CBS is either not covering it or lying about things.
The point is, the right understands that keeping their base uninformed is good for them. If they only watch Fox or Newsmax or OAN, they will believe anything. If you can make them think the MSM is lying to them, even better. The serious issue here is that the right wing channels have promoted false stories that have consequences. January 6th could not have happened without their indirect help.
