Edmonton Police
I'm no cop but, I see nothing wrong with what these cops did: they were out to get somebody who was suspected of being on the verge of commiting a crime who could have resulted in the death of other persons. Whatever the suspects were journalists or politicians made no difference. Yes, it look like a revenge but then, so what? Drinking and driving can kill, no matter who you are. If you do it, it doesn't matter if you were cought by accident or if you were under surveillance. I would have seen a problem if the undercover within the bar were buying drinks for the target but, besides that, if the guy drink and drive, he's a jerk anyway you look at it and desserve to get cought. The cops were only observing his comportement and were only going to intervene if he did commit the crime. He was in no way framed. If somebody didn't leaked the information, the target would have never known about the sting, and it's ok to me.
So, let's review:
1- somebody is probably about to commit a crime. (drinking and driving)
2- the cops get a tip about it. (fake or real, doesn't matter, they know the guy is there and might go and drive while drunk)
3- the cops react and post surveillance
What's wrong with this? Is it because the guy was "only drinking to have fun"? There are a lot of criminal who "just carry a gun to protect themself". A drunk driver can kill as easily as somebody carrying a gun. Some might say yes but, no crime was commited by drinking alone. So, if we follow the reasonning behind the accusations against these cops, they should not investigate any tips about peoples carrying guns either. Carrying a gun doesn't mean you're going to kill with it, right? So you might not be commiting a crime by carrying a gun, same as somebody who's drinking but, the possibility is there. If the possibility is strong enough (it's not hunting season / the guy got there with his own weels) then I insist the cops do check the guy out.
