I was in a seedy hotel like that once many, many years ago. I was just getting my room key and then my girlfriend came into the lobby. when he saw her, he said he gave me keys to the wrong room and he exchanged it. i thought nothing of it, and my room ended up sharing a wall with the reception desk. Only years later did it dawn on me that he may have placed us in that room to spy on us somehow. This was pre-internet, so I wouldn't have really cared - but i was either very naive then, or very paranoid 20 years after the fact.
