Thanks. I saw tweets from the supporters of this bill that it becomes law tomorrow. Reading about this online with effective dates is starting get as bad as looking up health symptoms & every article says it's cancer.
We will see confirmation in the news.

I'm not changing anything right now. There's no way in hell that enforcement is absolute and immediate. Many hobbyists may have technically broken the law in some respects under the former legislative regime, despite consent and with mutual respect.

http://mybitchacademy.tumblr.com/post/101930859342/bill-c36-gets-signed-by-the-royal-assent-today

Bill #C36 gets signed by the royal assent today, so now it is the 30 day countdown until the enforcement of the new Canadian sex work laws begins. Which police forces in Canada are going to aggressively enforce these new laws, and which police forces will decide to focus on actual crime?

Which third party advertisers are going to get charged first? Which clients are going to be targeted and arrested? Which street-based workers will get fined or charged for being near a park or school? Which escort agencies or dungeon Headmistresses will get arrested for gaining material benefit from their employees? We all have 30 days to figure out what we are going to do, and have to try and read into the future in terms of how this is going to play out.

As a consenting independent adult who has worked in the adult entertainment industry for well over a decade now, I cannot believe that these religious based, conservative moralist government officials, along with anti-sex work radical feminists, have taken a part of My life which I love, away from Me. And why? Because they want to force their belief systems onto My life and make My job impossible to do without entrapping My clients and coworkers, through the systemic violence of criminalization.

What a bunch of bullies! I am sure they are all rejoicing in their comfy white privileged, upper middle classed homes, patting themselves on the back for their success in their attempts to end sex work.

Well said!

Thank you again.

I think one side effect of this Bill is that many of us have learned more about the legislative process in Canada, and the way the government operates including the Senate. It is illuminating and in some respects, disgusting.

The pre-Reformer Harper was part of the National Citizens Coalition that pushed for Senate reform to make it an elected Senate.

Now, they politically benefit from their pro-Conservative stacked Senate. What hypocrites. What a duplicitous government.

Completely agree! I'm disgusted at how things work in this country!

they only focusing on the streets
That's an assumption based on their previous enforcement due to past public nuisance, but God knows what "re-focusing" on the purchasers of sex might entail. It might be broader than traditional street enforcement, which communication was illegal for both SPs and buyers in the previous regime.

A recent summary of C-36 by the Pivot Legal Society; short and to the point:

Bill C-36: A backgrounder
Written by Kevin Hollett on November 06, 2014

Bill C-36: An Act to amend the Criminal Code in response to the Supreme Court of Canada decision in Attorney General of Canada v. Bedford and to make consequential amendments to other Acts

The Government of Canada has consistently misrepresented Bill C-36 by saying that this legislation only targets clients and exploitive third parties, while not criminalizing sex workers and others who may enhance sex workers’ safety. In fact, Bill C-36 will result in sweeping criminalization of the sex industry, targeting sex workers, clients, and third parties, and will have the effect of increasing sex workers’ vulnerability to violence and other forms of abuse.

Bill C-36 targets sex workers, clients, and third parties in various ways and will have the following harmful effects:

1- The prohibitions on public communication (sections 213 and 286.1(1)) will result in displacement of street-based sex workers to dangerous, isolated areas where they are unable to properly screen clients and will continue to face barriers to police protection.

2- Due to the prohibition on the purchase of sexual services (section 286.1(1)), sex workers will be unable to properly screen clients, will have diminished access to police protection, and will be unable to work in safe indoor venues because it will be against the law for their clients to attend their place of business.

3- The safety of sex workers will be impacted by the amended procuring provision (section 286.3(1)), which is extremely broad and will capture many safety-enhancing relationships with third parties (such as managers, drivers, and booking agents). Third parties are also criminalized by the prohibition on materially benefitting from another person’s sex work (section 286.2(1), (3), (4), (5), and (6)), which captures people who are in a management role, including those who increase the safety of sex workers. In addition to being unnecessarily vague, this provision is extremely complicated, making it virtually impossible to know if a third party is captured by the law or not.

4- Sex workers’ safety will be impaired because it will be virtually impossible to work indoors when sex workers cannot promote their services. The advertising ban (section 286.4) targets newspapers, websites, magazines, and other forms of media that may carry sex industry ads, third parties who advertise other people’s sexual services, and sex workers who wish to advertise collectively.

Bill C-36 proposes a regime of total criminalization that will recreate and exacerbate all of the harms faced by sex workers under the provisions that were at issue in Canada v. Bedford. Bill C-36 is an unconstitutional variation of the recently struck laws, and it imposes the same or increased danger, criminalization, and stigma on sex workers.

Very concise. Excellent.

The Senators, except one, have no brains for critical thinking. What a fucking farce.

Look up info on gov websites, not journalists. Its in the preamble or amendments or backgrounder, I forget which, but it's in there. Peter MacKay said it as well in the HoC.
Hey, you're starting to sound like my doctor telling me to stop looking things up online!!!! I once looked up a bunch of symptoms I was having. Showed up as everything from cancer to HIV. Turns out it was a pinched nerve. In the meantime, we have 30 days of fun ahead of us.
