Stepping down is a face saving move for Gainey. He is obviously a victim of high expectation and he failed to deliver the Cup to Montreal last year. It is unlikely that Montreal will beat power house teams such as Washington or Pittsburgh to get to Stanley Cup final this year.

I was thinking that Gainey lost a daughter prematurely. He and Brian Burke have both experienced the worst fears of a parent.

That is not the way i heard it. They were going to fire him. I was talking to my source, a very good one, when Gainey jumped the gun and resigned.
Press conference scheduled at 4:00, but suddenly Gainey releases statement ... I trust my source. They were going to fire him.
