Mojo Radio has lost its mojo

I just tuned in to AM640 and it would appear that they have completely changed their format. They are no longer "talk radio for guys" and seem to be just a regular talk radio station. It looks like Mike Stafford is still around but I wonder if he will be castrated under the new format.

The whole "talk radio for neanderthals" gets old after a while. When Andrew Crystal jumped ship, so did I. Stafford comes across as a bitter, disgruntled radio employee. And I dunno what John Oakley was thinking. He went from the #1 radio station in Ontario to #13. Yup, that's right, Mojo is way down there in the ratings (granted, that was about 6 months ago). I was actually kinda surprised how low they are on the totem pole.

Although not a big fan of the "talk radio for cement heads" format MOJO was not given enough time to build in this market. Never has a station been successfully built, in Toronto's modern days, under 5 years.

MOJO remains the hottest promo'd and id'd radio station in this city so hopefully they can make a silk purse out of this sow's ear.

Nah, I think they were in quite long enough. If you can't get above 13th in five years than too bad, so sad. Time to clean house.

I remember back when MOJO started there were rumours that the owners bought it with a future eye to turn it into an all sports station, but they had to bide their time for some reason (I can't remember why). Maybe now is the time.

blah blah blah was all i heard on Mojo when i tuned in today. I dont listen to it alot but it had its place for some light, fun listening. Today it sounded exactly like every other station on the talk radio dial. I guess in the end its all about $$$$ and they werent doing too well. Too bad. as i said it had its place and time. Times over i guess

MOJO lost me when Humble and Fred left to shill for the likes of Avril Laviegne on Mix.
It speaks volumes for the state of radio in this town when the two funniest guys on the radio have to plug "Women in Song" on 99.9 without making an off the cuff witticism about the very people they used to make fun of on MOJO or the Edge. I swear they play Sheryl Crow at least every half hour on that station.

And the Edge has lost it's edge as well. Nothing but a tiny pawn in a corporate conglomerate now.

Remember when Rush sang about the "Spirit of the Radio"? Giving praise for the Indie station that was CFNY102.1? Well no more. It's been given marching orders by big business to only play mainstream rock and pop and to bleep out any naughty words that might come along during a song or an interview.

And what about the "mighty" Q? Does anyone else get sick of Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd 24 hours a day? I got the albums. Enough already.

And let's not forget our brothers in Ottawa. They couldn't even sustain their own alternative "Edge" Station 101.1. It's become, believe it or not, a C&W station now!!!

No wonder people download illegal music from the internet.

Mojo may have been talk radio for guys but every time I tuned in all the callers were women whining about their man or lack there of and suprised at why they can't find one. Women on guys radio, girlfirends in strip clubs...Is nothing sacred anymore?

MOJO was on for a lot longer than 2 years.

I agree that it's really bland now. I don't know what they're schtick is supposed to be other than generic "oatmeal".

But I was glad when Scruff (washed up has-been) and Humble & Fred left (I couldn't stand these fools - they're like the high school clowns who never grew up).

I think it might have just been the case of time to shake things up a bit.

yes I liked mojo the way it was before. I listen in now and then but when I heard the change this week it just didn't seem to entertain me as much as before. I love coast 2 coast and of course leafs hockey when it resumes!

I like Leafs Lunch too, but I must admit it gets frickken monotonous when there's no game for 3-4 days and they keep talking and talking about the same nothing everyday.

Mojo

has been on for about 3 years, and they keep going through some changes trying to find their niche. I keep listening even though Andrew Krystal is gone, that was a bit of downer he is good. Did he jump ship or was he dumped?


Stafford is good, but he may have been muzzled, I hope not. The Leaf Lunch is informative, but at times does seem repetitive especially now, but there is the world cup to discuss. I don't want to hear about the possible lay off, that would be a real downer if and when it happensl

Merek can be good at times and although I don't watch Ed the Sock , he can be funny sometimes.

I've heard Oakley sometimes and one of the times he had on maybe tbill I'm not sure, but they seem to be steering away from that sort of chat. This kind of chat on the radio would be cool but of course they have the crtc to consider.

I'll give them some more time but I'm looking for more guy chat with more in depth golf news, basketball, massage protocall, etc, or else I'll have to go back to fm.

I kind of miss the music.

Yeah leafs lunch is good. but obviously more entertaining when the leafs are playing. if the wcoh and the possibility of a strike didnt happen now then the only thing to talk about is off season trades and that makes it even more boring lol

The rumour is that Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment made it a condition of the new deal they struck to have Mojo broadcast Leafs games for the next 3 years they "had to clean up their act". Krystal and Scruff were let go. Krystal is on CFRB now if I'm not mistaken.

It's too bad, if Mojo had really done what they intended in the beginning which was suppossed to be "Maxim Magazine" on the radio it could have been something unique. I used to love listening to Ripkin and Johnny B in the morning, it was some pretty funny stuff.

Now it is just another corporate Corus owned radio station that spends more time listening to focus groups and doing the "safe" thing rather than something new and original. IMHO this move will not help the ratings. If I want all news I will listen to 680 News. If I want informed chat, CFRB, if I want sports The Fan, if I want to hear about tits and ass, cars, alien abuductions, etc. I will have to get a satelite radio. That seems to be the future. Howard Stern is talking about switching to satelite once his current contract is done because from what I understand the FCC can't touch him if he is on satelite.

RIP Mojo Radio, a good idea that was never given a chance.

The trouble with Mojo as "Radio Maxim" was that most of its on-air "stars" (Scruff, H&F etc) were about a generation older than the Maxim demo--and it showed. Plus, Maxim is a guy's style mag at least as much as it's a T&A mag; and as we know, "radio guy" and "style" are polar opposites.

In its ability to disappoint, Mojo didn't disappoint.
