Of course, leaving Smoltz in for three innings didn't hurt the Braves.
Just to be clear ......

The problem with leaving a reliever in for too long is that he doesn't have the range of pitches that a starter does - usually only two - especially a closer. Mariano has only one, but he's a TOTAL mutant. Anyway, the fewer pitches a guy has, the fewer things he has to mix up to keep the hitters off-balance.
Just my theory.
Regardless, I don't like judging things in hindsight, but I thought at the time it was a very questionable move. Not baldly bad (like the Yankees sending Williams and Posada to their deaths at third and home in game one), just questionable.
Well, let the questions begin. ;)
Its understandable he left him in there, however its not understandable how noone was warming up in the bullpen until he walked 2 guys on like 9 pitches...

so far so good, chose NY/Bos

I think the Astros blew their chance. Up 5-2 and lost 6-5. The whole never beating the Braves or winning a playoff series hanging over their head. Now I wouldnt be surprised if the Braves.

Well I was wrong, the Braves are getting waxed, and the Astros have rid themselves of the ghosts of playoff pasts...

Round 2 Predictions

Red Sox in 7 over the Yankees
This one could very well go either way. They both have deep lineups but I think the difference will be the starting pitching in which case the Red Sox are superior in that department. Plus Pedro has that little dude with him, ha.

Cardinals in 5 over the Astros
The Astros rotation will be in tatters when that series starts. Oswalt and Clemens cant go 2 consecutive starts on 3 days rest. If Houston has any hope, they need to get a split after the first 2 games. But with guys like Backe and Munro possibly going, not gonna happen vs. that lineup. If Miller and Pettite weren't injured, they would be a force, but as it stands, they dont have them.

Here and there
Bye-bye Bravos (again)

Thank God we avoid another Yankees-Braves snooze-fest.

Kathleen, I'm cheering for a Red Sox-Astros Series (can you imagine Clemens winning game seven at Fenway??) but somehow I suspect it'll be Yankees-Cardinals...

Hope I'm wrong...

I'll go with the Sox in seven in the AL - the Yankees rotation isn't getting any healthier, and the Sox can line up nine pretty good hitters.

In the NL, let's say the Cards in six - it's definitely problematic for the Astros not to have either of their aces ready until Game Three. Ouch.

I'm still sticking with the Redbirds.

Good for Boston. Of course, we've only replaced the run-away highest payroll with the second highest. :(

I cant believe they pulled this off! Unbelievable, and to do it against the Yankees makes it that much more sweeter. They came back and ManRam didnt have a single RBI in the series, remarkable.

And Ranger68, some "useless turd" eh? :)

And of interesting note, if the Astros win...AL has home field advantage for the world series, and it was Clemens who lost it for the AL and Manny and Ortiz had homeruns that game, go figure!

Damon was a useless terd through six games, then had a large hand in a game they ran away with.
Yep.
Totally overrated. Or, if you prefer, useless terd. :)

previous 6 games mean nothing...he came through and thats that. I disagree with him being "totally" overrated. Overrated maybe, but not ridiculously so.

Previous six games mean nothing?!?! Six playoff games against your bitterest rival?! LOL He hit a buck-three in the six most important games of the Sox season leading up to tonight.

Oh, well - to each his own.

Definitely overrated, but I guess that's a subjective assessment. I know I wouldn't pick him very high for my team. He doesn't play center-field defense well, but doesn't have the power for the corners. He actually doesn't really hit all that well, despite playing half his games IN BOSTON - this year was the first he really "broke out" - but at thirty, he's not a good bet to improve. He's useful - just far from being a star.

in the end, Boston won right...so is there really much to argue? If New York won, then your totally overrated comments would be much more suitable.

I see your point, no need to argue further...I'm sure there will be more of those in the future, haha

Well, they won DESPITE Damon's brutal play in the first six games, which almost eliminated them. ;)

Yes, lets forget his torrid hitting down the streach and against the Angels and focus only on 6 games where there were several Sox players who didn't hit well.

Hey, the guy's played three years in Fenway now, and has only put up star-quality offensive numbers in one of them.
Everyone's entitled to their opinions.
Mine is that Damon's overrated - mostly because he plays in Boston, he turned into Grizzly Adams, and he scored 120-odd runs this year (of course, this had *nothing* to do with the hitters behind him  ).

I've gone 6 for 6 for what its worth...

I am saying Boston will win, dont know how many games.
This is a tough series to call, both teams have solid lineups. I would favour Boston due the Pedro/Schilling factor. But who knows if Schilling will even start. But more importantly, when the series shifts to St. Louis, Boston probably wont have Ortiz in the lineup because he probably hasnt played 1B since April. And when the series is in Boston, the Cardinals can add another hitter to the lineup perhaps making it more potent...in any case should be a good series!!
