Minneapolis settles lawsuit with George Floyd’s family for $27m

The city of Minneapolis has reached a $27m settlement with the family of George Floyd, whose death sparked global protests over racial injustice, in one of the highest settlements on record for police misconduct.

The settlement, unanimously approved by city council members in a closed-door session, ends a civil lawsuit brought by Floyd’s family members. A separate criminal case is proceeding against Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who has been charged in Floyd’s killing.

Floyd’s family and their attorney, Benjamin Crump, were joined at a press conference on Friday by Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and the city council. Several family members wore masks printed with “8:46”, for the eight minutes and 46 seconds Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck.

Seems a little high to me but that's publicity. If it was an asian guy, latino or white guy wouldn't make any headlines & maybe a million dollar wrongful death suit. Apparently some lives are worth more! Don't get me wrong all officers involved should be getting a life sentence & a punch in the face every other morning for letting it happen...anyone of those low life's could have pulled him off & said whoa buddy that's enough. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to see he's not breathing

Wouldn't hurt to give the pregnant lady who he pointed a gun to her stomach a couple million. Floyd made his family rich. I believe there was already several million raised before this.

in terms of headlines the American media only cares about white, black and Latino issues they don’t care about Asians. Hate crimes against Asians is at a all time high (around the world too) but no one cares to really talk about that.

Paying GF's family might be the right thing to do, but the timing is beyond ridiculous.

Let the trial of former cops take place. Let the courts decide what the outcome is. Then and only then should a payout be disclosed to public.

City of Minneapolis really screwed any chances for those 4 former cops to receive an impartial trial.

I agree however it wouldn't hurt if the Chinese Diplomats were a little more Diplomatic.... They basically Scold us every time our Government does anything... AND OBVIOUSLY they dont represent all Asians... but it creates BAD PRESS

City's insurance is likely fitting the bill (or at least that's the way it works in lots of big organizations).
