I think it is good considering people can‘t afford anything right now.

Better than nothing but if you ask me, minimum wage should be $20/hr...

You will have a lot of people disagree. A lot don’t believe students should be making that in part time jobs. Or cashiers at Tim Hortons for example.
Believe it or not...yes a lot of part time students but in the current economy...majority of the people earning minimum wage aren't students...they're a fraction of it...

at 40hrs per week, $16/hr is still only a paltry $33K per year, gross.

Details:

The federal minimum wage will increase from $15.55 to $16.65 per hour on April 1, 2023. Based on the Consumer Price Index, which rose 6.8% in 2022, the increase will help make life more affordable for the approximately 26,000 Canadian workers who earn less than the current rate.

Federally regulated private-sector employers must adjust their payroll information with the new rate to ensure workers and interns are paid correctly as of April 1. Where the provincial or territorial minimum wage rate is higher than the federal minimum wage, employers must apply the higher rate.

The federal minimum wage applies to the federally regulated private sectors, including banks, postal and courier services, and interprovincial air, rail, road, and marine transportation.

A living wage in Toronto is about $23.50
Interesting. That equates to about $49K annually, gross. Average Government of Canada salary is $51,450.00. So basically, a large majority of the people working to keep the Canadian Government running are only earning a basic living wage by Toronto standards. It may equate to something more from a standard of living perspective in smaller urban centers across the country, but in a city like Ottawa where the vast majority of government workers are located, there are a LOT of individuals living just slightly above the minimum required to survive.

For a newcomer or new family, a couple who will both earn minimum wage will get by with rental groceries, bills and probably a used vehicle....it's doable...but you can bet your house they won't be buying a house or won't be able to afford one..."pride of ownership" is a thing of the past....

Maybe for dual income households but otherwise Bull.

A 1 bedroom apartment in Toronto is $2200+ for a roach motel now, I know I've been looking as my building is being torn down and we're being kicked out in summer 2025, hell I've seen property corps asking for $1300+ for a fucking bedroom in a house or apartment.

Add all utilities and food and your $23.50 leaves you with barely anything for savings, emergencies or entertainment.

That sucks. I’m sorry. This is the worst time to be trying to find housing.

Eh, I'm still holding on to the hope the corp will actually offer units in their other gajillion properties they've slurped away from normal folk. Not much hope mind you since I'm a realist but still. I was also looking because I'm seriously starting to hate this place.

It's a really old building and the corp has done shit maintenance on it. Can't even use my PC and the microwave at the same time if my PC is on a graphic heavy game, kills the power in the whole unit (because of course everything is on one breaker...)and they basically just slapped 3 pronged outlets everywhere without touching the wiring so nothing is grounded so I get a nice tingly feeling if I touch things that both electronic and made of metal. (again, PC and microwave.)

Pretty sure they've painted over a previous tenant.

And I "Lucked out" considering I got it for $1600 at the time.

Still If I do move out to somewhere that is at current market greed rate even though I make a little over 70k/year as a single income it is seriously going kill my mp/sp budget. Among other things. So I can't even imagine how single or even double income folk at min wage are going to fare...

They need to have a seperate min. wage for students. I used to hire 1 or 2 every summer but I stopped because they aren't worth the money. They work slow.

Now if a super hot one came in then it might be worth it just to look at her.

Just finished lunch at McDonald’s. All I had was a small soft drink six piece nugget and a Mc double came out to $12. I would have to work almost an hour just for that

Imagine a family of four, that would be about $50 per meal at a fast food joint. It used to be that you could eat somewhere nice at a proper restaurant for that kind of money

Let's celebrate! Oh, oh I forgot. On April 1 the carbon taxes are going up and with them EVERYTHING else. On top of inflation, the poor minimum wage suckers are actually probably getting a pay cut.
