Could Toronto be restricting right turns on reds? It would make our roads safer & reduce collisions with pedestrians says Layton. He has a motion at the Infrastructure & Environment Committee asking staff to include right turn restrictions in an upcoming report.

Didn't Quebec just reverse their long standing ban on right on red turns, with the exception of certain intersections?

I think it's a great idea if you don't care about air pollution with millions of cars idling unnecessarily. Layton is one of those guys who doesn't see the whole picture.

This is just another stupid Toronto city council idea to appease to pedestrians . It's already difficult enough to turn right in Toronto. Now you'll have cars waiting forever since they can't turn right on red, and can't turn on green since pedestrians will be crossing.

All part of the War on the Car that these idiots are waging!

It's an excellent idea. Too many drivers ignore pedestrians when making a right turn on red. Toronto has a very high death and injury rate of pedestrians.

I like the idea for certain intersections. I don't think it needs to apply to all. I've had too many close calls from morons not paying attention when they are making a right on red.

This can work if they add dedicated 'right turn' signals to most intersections to allow those turning right the opportunity to do so, rather than sharing the green with pedestrians crossing their path making them wait. What's being proposed is only half of the solution which all too often the Toronto CC's seem to usually do.

There’re many places in the world that do not allow right turn on red esp places with dense population.

But with that the traffic lights and system will need to be adjusted. It’s not as easy as one step.

We do need a few more scramble intersections like Yonge and Dundas where only cars or pedestrians can be in the intersection at any one time. Yes it does increase vehicle traffic, but hopefully it reduces the potential conflict points.

As a driver, such a rule would not bother me at all if it saves lives. One day, I could be the one or perhaps a family member who could be at risk of being hit by a car driven by one more asshole distracted driver who is in a hurry and thinks that his/her time is more important than someone's life.

I agree. Some people here think that this is part of a war on cars but it is not. I am a driver and I often get outraged by the stupidity and negligence of drivers - running red lights, speeding, driving on the sidewalk. As a driver, I'd say to all those drivers out there. One day, it could be your mother/father, your daughter/son, wife/husband, relative trying to cross the street and being at risk of getting hit by a car driven by someone who is too bloody distracted or impatient to drive safely. I can guarantee you that if that were the case, you would look at the situation differently.

That is actually a great idea. You should contact your City Counsellor to propose it.

Most of Quebec allows right turn on red but Montreal does not.
I lived in Montreal as a young adult, I was surprised when I came to Toronto and saw cars making right hand turns on red. (Of course, England is the worse because they drive on the wrong side of the road.)

In england the equivalent would be turning left on a red and that is prohibited. Turning right on a red light in 'continental' europe where they drive on the same side of the road as here is also prohibited. It seems to be really only be a thing in North America (except Montreal and Manhatten)

We have delayed walking signals on greens out here in Durham. We get the green and the walk sign doesn't appear until a few cars have been able to make the turn, then it go.

I wish people would pay attention to them more without just walking on the green that is for cars, but it is at least something.

What needs to be done is cracking down on pedestrians who enter the intersection when the pedestrian signal goes red.

Used to be that the pedestrian signal has 2 phases, just a white walk symbol and a red hand which would flash (and the meaning was "move your ass" if you're in the crosswalk) and then go solid red. People, more or less. would not enter the intersection on the flashing red hand.

Then they replaced the flashing red hand with a count down Timer till the hand goes solid red and people began entering the intersection when legally they aren't supposed to figuring "I can make that."

What happens now is pdestrians entering the intersection with 2 or 3 seconds left on the clock knowing they have another 2 seconds on the inter-red and that they can make it because the cars will wait.

So start ticketing pedestrians who constantly pull that shit.

Correct. Turning right at a red light is allowed in Québec, except where prohibited by a traffic sign and on the island of Montréal.

Pedestrians also bear some responsibility. So, many times they can't hear me because they are wearing earphones. Joggers are the worse.
