I've just read about this new technology. Is it available in Canada? Can I use it to create a portable wi fi network for my iPad?

Or just get an Android phone with version 2.2 or greater of the OS along with a 1gb+ data plan, should have the mobile hotspot feature built in.

OK, I'm officially confused.

As per djk Bell has a mifi on a 3 year plan. Is this an adjunct to a cell phone plan? And it says you need a USB...so not compatible with iPad?

Re: android phones. They're pretty nice. So what happens, my iPad picks up wifi from the phone through Bluetooth?

Thanks all.

What you want is a device that creates a wifi network and uses 3g (or 4g) data service. The device (phone that is tethered or mifi device) crates the hotspot and your iPad uses that. My Verizon mifi card uses the Verizon 3g network for data, creates a wifi hotspot and allows up to 5 devices to be connected. On our way to MN for Thanksgiving my family is sitting in the CVG airport, mifi is on and my son is downloading games to his ipod touch, my daughter is booking concert tickets on her Mac and I'm doing email...... very handy.

Android (version 2.1 does it as well) creates a wireless hot spot using it's 3G connection just as if using a wifi modem at home (not bluetooth). It's really easy to do and I've had friends with iphones use my wireless so should be no problem for an ipad.

Yes! That's what I'm looking for. Pure simplicity. I'll check it out.

Posting back recent visit to Rogers. They tell me I have two options:
- only android phone they have which creates a wifi hotspot is a Galaxy. Nice phone, no new service plan required as your iPad gets tethered to your existing plan.

- get a mifi portable "box" that lets you add on up to five products (eg. Pads, PC's) for an additional $25/month but you get a volume discount on high data usage anticipated with this setup.

I will eventually go with option one and watch my data usage. I may wait until more handset choice becomes available.
