In December of 2006, Mexico's new President Felipe Calderón declared war on the drug cartels, reversing
earlier government passiveness. Since then, the government has made some gains, but at a heavy price - gun battles, assasinations, kidnappings, fights between rival cartels, and reprisals have resulted in over 9,500 deaths since December 2006 - over 5,300 killed last year alone.

I'm not sure if it's a war the government can win. I read an article in Rolling Stone last year detailing the amount of corruption in the government. They talked about infiltrators, politicians on the payroll, informants with agendas and more and stronger artillery which made it sound all but impossible for the drug lords to be brought down.

ya well obama is going to use this situation to advance his gun control regulations and imigration policies. When it comes to US politics, it isn't always about the bad guys.

Can't argue there. In politics, everybody will use whatever they can to advance their own agendas.
