A recent thread about an SP surcharging 30% for credit cards is the reason for this poll. Does anyone really use credit cards?

I do... It's a great way to accumulate frequent flyer miles. The way I look at it, the SP's are basically paying my airfare! LOL

Have you found many SPs or agencies that don't charge extra for "plastic"? If not, the air-miles don't make up for the added cost.

Agencies don't charge that much extra for credit card billing. I also use it for the convenience factor. That way, I don't have to walk around with large sums of cash on my person. Generally, it only costs me an extra $30.00/hr for using plastic.

Credit card billings often appear as limousine services or consulting fees or anything other than "Escort Service". So if you travel a fair amount, it can be fairly straightforward to bury these charges in the expense account.

Not that I would ever do such a thing mind you ... ;)

Cash for me please....

I don't have the opportunity to easily hide recreational fees in an expense account. I doubt I would anyway since it's not worth risking my professional reputation for a free roll in the hay with an SP.

Since I pay my own way, I prefer to save the $50 or more per session that are usually added on when a credit card gets used.

After a few visits, it's almost like a free-one if you look at the savings!

I've never seriously considered using credit cards for hobbying, the surcharge just seems too high. I use cash, although my pet peeve is that I hate having to give an sp a huge wad of $20's, but that is all I can get out of the atm.

I used credit card a lot of times especially on multiple hours, and that’s because I don’t want to carry high amounts of money in my pocket.
I think that 1/3 of my encounters were with credit card.
The surcharge is usually 15%-20% and as they explained it to me the money goes to the company that they charge it for (limousine services or something else) and not for them (agency).

Extra Charges...

To me, it does not matter where the extra charges go. If they go to the SP, the Agency, a third party company, or a bank. The fact remains that on a basic two-hour call, $50 to $80 extra can easily be added to the cost; and this is money out of my pocket.

That means that after a couple of credit-card encounters, there's almost enough service charges to have paid for a whole other visit if I had been using cash!

I have accepted that the hobby is not cheap and I am prepared to pay good money for good service. Still, I see no reason to throw extra money away that I could put to more effective use elsewhere. Why should I finance someone else's bonus fund?

Some ATMs (TD, for example) give out $50 bills so this helps address the problem of carying wads of $20s. I also usually hobby at home (single guy with no roommates) so I don't have to risk carrying lots of cash to unfamilar environments.

Cash is King

Cash is what I use exclusively. Beyond the surcharges, there is the issue of privacy and discretion. With cash there is no record, no paper trail, no nothing.
Even though I carry one credit card that comes to my post office box (and I have the only key), there is always a chance that my spouse might see the statement and I would hate to try and explain a limo service for $200-$300 in a town where I drove to.
Also, when credit cards are used there the SP is more likely to want to see identification which would expose my home address. Since I only hobby when I am out of town (really out of country since I am from the US) on business, that is just something I do not want to risk.

I agree that using cash is the best but when you don’t have a choice you use your credit card.
And by saying no choice I mean that you planned to party for 1 or 2 hours and then you decided to keep the sp for more and you don’t have the cash in your pocket to do it - then you use your credit card.
I used it few times before and I never had any problems.
I don’t really care where and to whom the surcharges go to, it's a service and for service we need to pay.

I always go with cash since I am one of those people who is paranoid about the "paper trail" being left behind. I honestly doubt anything going sour if I paid using a CC but I just feel more comfortable using cash.

Wow...

I'm surprised at the number of people who claim to hide SPs and other adult entertainment on their expense accounts. How do you explain $200+ "limosine" charges to the accounting department?

I would never use a cc. The paper trail is too risky. Remember that agency that got busted in TO last winter? One of the things the cops said they were going to do was to call up some of the Johns to "gather evidence" I realize that you could never get busted, but imagine, two years later, sitting at home wiht the new wife, and she picks up the phone...
