I like Jean - he was pretty cool

- he punched out a dude in self defense
- he decided not to go to war which seems like the right decision with each passing day
- he tried to legalized dope
- he didn't try to appeal the same sex marriage law....what was it he said...'i rather error in the way of giving a minority group too much rights rather then taking away their rights, too many times in our history, people's rights were taken which led to grave misfortunes...' (some thing to that extent)

all in all, i think he did some good things and some bad things, i like him

Well , I have to disagree with you . He didn't accomplish much of anything and the waste under his watch was unmatched by any previous government .

Mr. Chretien's dedication to serving his country in the political arena and his accomplishments in a long career were, in the end, only eclipsed by his personal vindictiveness and arrogance.

On the plus side he presided over a prosperous Canada where the federal finances were greatly improved over previous years. He maintained Canada's independence against strong pressure from the US to join military action against Iraq. He maintained Canada's presence on the world stage and helped to position this country as a leader in Third World assistance.

On the down side, his laissez faire attitude almost lost us the country by the slimmest of margins in the last Quebec referendum. His arrogance left the Canadian Forces abandoned with antiquated equipment that is plain dangerous to their lives. And his vindictiveness left the country without a true leader for a year when very little substantive legislation was passed.

Time will tell for sure, but I think history will remember Mr. Chretien as a long-serving politician who was blinded by his lust for power, and who let that lust guide his decisions rather than being focussed on what was best for the country.

You make some valid points X

But I still think Jean try to do what he believe was best for this country....even though some of his beliefs were self-serving

...i guess that's all you can ask for in a politician

btw...did you ever get that 'hummer' from goober after you surpass 1000 post?
