There is a huge mental illness awareness campaign to-day and the past couple of days. Clara Hughes is leading the charge along with Bell (good Canadian telecom company). They say that one in five Canadians are currently suffering or have suffered from mental illness. I remember when former Minister of Finance Michael Wilson's son committed suicide due to depression.

P.S. All the Rockslingers might be crazy:p but we do not have a history of mental illness. Thank goodness.

20% of the population experiences this illness, but it's probable that it's double that.
"It is probable that it's double that." Wow, that would mean 40% of the general population. That is a very high percentage.

So, is "depression" a rich Western disease? People in poor countries are too busy trying keep body and soul together to get depressed?

Kinda reminds me of that scene in Patton where the general confronts the shellshock patient.

Clearly, Clara Hughes and Ma Bell have a long way to go before their message gets through to everyone.

Why do you think that's high? AMA predicts by 2020 that depression will the third leading cause of death. We die because of failure or trauma and everything is really a sympton (Heart/Stroke, Cancer, etc) What the AMA is saying that the way the world is and the aging population depression increases. 20% are diagnosed because they seek help or fall into a system of sorts that results in a diagnosis. How many people don't have access to health care, clinicians, medication and other supports? Ok, you can't afford help, that will probably cause more depression and take the person further into an abyss.

Do you really know the people that you work with or your neighbours? Do you really know what's happening behind closed doors and outside of the office, and do you care? When do we care, when something traumatic happens and that's only a reactive response. Think of the extensions of people in someone's life that become affected due to depression or illness.

Clara Hughes suffered for two years, she's lucky and she's advocating for others. It's really a deep subject. I'm sure that many will now post people are weak, etc, and it's not worth getting into a heated debate.

I can understand someone who is very elderly (say 90) suffering from various ailments being depressed. Or, someone who lost a loved one or financial nestegg.
Just saw a CTV interview with the Campbell family, they lost two sons by suicide when they were 20. Why would someone commit suicide when their whole life lies ahead of them?

Michale Landsburg(sp) just announced he also suffered from depression.

On my recent sex vaca to DR I spent a couple days with a girl who seemed to be skitso. She acted odd in public and people would stare at us, lived in an abandoned house, and apperared to see imaginary things. She was very hot and seeing her naked made me drool, very pretty and perfect body, beautiful tits, every time I wanted to let her go I ended up fucking her. She never wore a bra and her tits looked so perfect hanging in her tshirt.

I'm not so sure it is that high, but it depends on how you classify mental illness. It is highly unlikely that 40% of the population have serious psychiatric illness such as schizophrenia, MPD or even serious personality disorders. My guess is that the 20% refer to those who may have moderate to serious (i.e. clinical) anxiety, mood disorders (i.e. bi-polar disorder or depression), PTSD, ADHD or addictions. I can see 40% if you include those suffer from mild depression or anxiety disorders - like those who just exhibit a few symptoms of each.
Mental Illness is not just severe disorders dealing with psychiatrics. The DSMR has the information having one disorder, usually leads to other disorders or symptoms of other disorders. Untreated they become worse don't minimize the affects. When a loved one dies, we go through a depression and sometimes worse. With less sunlight and the cold weather, there is seasonal affective disorder, hoarding, eating, etc. I'm suggesting only for this day to combine ALL mental illnesses, to educate that many suffer from time to time.

http://www.cmha.ca/BINS/content_page.asp?cid=3-86-87 If a person has 5 or more of the symptoms they are clinically depressed and more likely to suffer further depressive issues.

Depression is probably the most common psychological disorder and the one that receives the most attention. Lately, we hear about millions of Americans being treated with Prozac and a multitude of other antidepressants. Everybody seems to know someone who is depressed whether a family member, a close friend or a co-worker.
Depression makes a person feel sad, hopeless, worthless, pessimistic and guilty. Often the sufferer has difficulty concentrating and making decisions, has a loss of appetite and weight or a weight gain, has difficulty sleeping, has a lack of energy and sometimes physical symptoms such as slow movement and speech. Depression must be taken seriously because of the high rate of suicide associated with it.
Many people are not aware of the many types of depression besides what is termed unipolar depression where the sufferer feels melancholic and never feels any highs. A brief description of manic depression (bipolar disorder), major depression, atypical depression, psychotic depression and dysthymia are discussed below.
Major Depression:
Major depression is probably one of the most common forms of depression. You probably know a handful of people who suffer from it. The sufferer seems to walk around with the weight of the world on his or her shoulders. He or she seems disinterested in becoming involved in regular activities and seems convinced that he or she will always be in this hopeless state. There is a lack of interest in sexual activity and in appetite and a weight loss.
Atypical Depression:
Atypical depression is a variation of depression that is slightly different from major depression. The sufferer is sometimes able to experience happiness and moments of elation. Symptoms of atypical depression include fatigue, oversleeping, overeating and weight gain. People who suffer from atypical depression believe that outside events control their mood (i.e. success, attention and praise). Episodes of atypical depression can last for months or a sufferer may live with it forever.
Psychotic Depression:
Sufferers of psychotic depression begin to hear and see imaginary things - - sounds, voices and visuals that do not exist. These are referred to as hallucinations, which are generally more common with someone suffering from schizophrenia. The hallucinations are not "positive" like they are with a manic depressive. The sufferer of psychotic depression imagines frightening and negative sounds and images.
Dysthymia:
Many people just walk around seeming depressed - - simply sad, blue or melancholic. They have been this way all of their lives. This is dysthymia - - a condition that people are not even aware of but just live with daily. They go through life feeling unimportant, dissatisfied, frightened and simply don't enjoy their lives. Medication is beneficial for this type of depression.
Manic Depression:
Manic depression can be defined as an emotional disorder characterized by changing mood shifts from depression to mania which can sometimes be quite rapid. People who suffer from manic depression have an extremely high rate of suicide.

Suicide is illegal under the Canadian Criminal Code, not sure what the penalty is but you can go to prison if you kill yourself.

Anyone know if attempted suicide can also get you charged?

it shouldn't be punishable by law, it should get you checked in and get help.

I think typing everything in lower case is a mild form of mental illness, simon482.
Talk to someone about it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schizoaffective_disorder

Schizoaffective disorder most commonly affects cognition and emotion. Auditory hallucinations, paranoia, bizarre delusions, or disorganized speech and thinking with significant social and occupational dysfunction are typical. The division into depressive and bipolar types is based on whether the individual has ever had a manic, hypomanic or mixed episode. Symptoms usually begin in early adulthood, which makes diagnosis prior to age 13 rare.

Wasup, you should consider yourself lucky if this gal was schizophrenic. She probably wouldn't have anyone helping her in the DR. Keep in mind that schizophrenia and D.I.D formerly known as multiple disorder are not the same.
