Postpartum Depression is a horrible and devastating condition. Also one which frequently is misunderstood. It would be wonderful if everyone who suffers from it was treated before the horrible occurred.

In the worse cases the mothers kill their little kids and babies. Should we talk about it? Is this something that can be discussed in polite company?

Finding mental illness is easy.
I'm not totally convinced it is always easy to spot. Is there an objective medical test like they have for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, broken arm, etc.?

Although mental illness is somewhat fashionable currently, who wants to be tagged as "mentally ill"?

True.
Many people do a very good job of hiding it.

I noticed many ads lately on mental illnesses on how to treat employees. Not sure what the sigma is behind it, maybe since our economy is going into the shitter, drug companies want more money.

I do think it's right to screen for depression, where do we start and stop. Should we screen our medical, our security, our public sectors for mental illness? I believe certain mental illnesses are temporary while others last for years. This is a question where one person may hide their mental illness and not get proper care based on such situations on ethics.

Query: Should we report co-workers who we think are mentally ill? They could be a danger to themselves and/or others.

BTW: I heard that some (many?) employers are now asking for police and credit bureau reference reports on new (and current?) employees. That guard in Edmonton who shot his 4 co-workers was in deep financial goo.

The bona fide sociopaths, those who oftentimes are most capable of creating the greatest harm towards others, usually fly under the radar, simply because they are so talented in the art of deception

Really, "think", that's all you have to go by, and you "think" its okay to ask this question and not receive criticism? GAWD sounds like a lot of tinkering to me.

This is very dangerous and wrong, particularly if you are wrong and can be grounds for harassment. Who made you a doctor to pick on your coworkers because they don't fit your norm. Obviously if they break the rules, are a threat to themselves and others through clear and observable action, for sure you should try to help. Not use it to crush a weak person who has social problems or adjusting to office potics or does not fit your idea of norms and what you think is acceptable.

Report only if there is a clear danger and you have solid justification.

Exactly. They are good in the art of deception and manipulation, are always a couple if steps ahead and keep morphing.

In the end of the day our intention should be to help and not crush the weak cause we can and not jump the gun because we like to think a lot.

You are right ! Humans originally were able to control this under tribal conditions and traditions which included different religions. Because of our populations today in inner cities and different traditions as well as religions. Good fuken Luck with that!

This is what they use to determine depression. DSM-IV

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_depressive_disorder#DSM-IV-TR_and_ICD-10_criteria

[h=3]DSM-IV-TR and ICD-10 criteria[/h] The most widely used criteria for diagnosing depressive conditions are found in the American Psychiatric Association's revised fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR), and the World Health Organization's International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10), which uses the name depressive episode for a single episode and recurrent depressive disorder for repeated episodes.[SUP][127][/SUP] The latter system is typically used in European countries, while the former is used in the US and many other non-European nations,[SUP][128][/SUP] and the authors of both have worked towards conforming one with the other.[SUP][129][/SUP]
Both DSM-IV-TR and ICD-10 mark out typical (main) depressive symptoms.[SUP][130][/SUP] ICD-10 defines three typical depressive symptoms (depressed mood, anhedonia, and reduced energy), two of which should be present to determine depressive disorder diagnosis.[SUP][131][/SUP][SUP][132][/SUP] According to DSM-IV-TR, there are two main depressive symptoms—depressed mood and anhedonia. At least one of these must be present to make a diagnosis of major depressive episode.[SUP][133][/SUP]
Major depressive disorder is classified as a mood disorder in DSM-IV-TR.[SUP][134][/SUP] The diagnosis hinges on the presence of single or recurrent major depressive episodes.[SUP][8][/SUP] Further qualifiers are used to classify both the episode itself and the course of the disorder. The category Depressive Disorder Not Otherwise Specified is diagnosed if the depressive episode's manifestation does not meet the criteria for a major depressive episode. The ICD-10 system does not use the term major depressive disorder but lists very similar criteria for the diagnosis of a depressive episode (mild, moderate or severe); the term recurrent may be added if there have been multiple episodes without mania.[SUP][127][/SUP]

Try to get to see a psychiatrist these days in Ontario without having to wait for about a year. And, if you need psychotherapy, and you don't have deep pockets, forget it.
