Mega Tsunami: Wave of Destruction

The discovery channel documentary detailing the true threat from landslide based mega tsunami aired again today.

It will be repeated Sunday morning at 4:00 am (Channel 42 Rogers - DISCOVERY channel)

It is a very humbling show and everyone should take a look to get a real perspective on just how fragile our existence here is.

Hurray for VCRs -- tape this show and watch it -- it is just fascinating.

Is it the same as this one, that I had previously posted about?

It is not a matter of if this will happen, but when. It could happen tomorrow or 200 years from now.

"The potential threat that scientists currently have their eye on is an insecure rock - the size of Manhattan Island or the Isle of Man - in the Canary Island of La Palma.

The rock is in the process of slipping into the sea and Professor McGuire fears that when it finally collapses, the resulting tsunami will cause massive destruction along the coasts of countries like the USA, UK and many on the African continent, within a matter of hours.

The global community needs to monitor the risk posed by Gee Gee`s, scientists claim
"Eventually the whole rock will collapse into the water, and the collapse - when it happens - will devastate the Atlantic margin," said Professor McGuire.

The triggering factor could be the eruption of the volcano on La Palma, called Cumbre Vieja, which could feasibly blow "anytime", according to Professor McGuire."

"Most of the rocky western flank of Cumbre Vieja is unstable enough to be dislodged in the next big eruption of the volcano, which is active enough to explode at least once or twice a century. Its last big event was in 1949.

Such a landslide from a future eruption could travel up to 60 kilometres (37 miles) from La Palma`s coast, causing the formation and then collapse of a dome of water 900 metres (3,000ft) high and tens of kilometres wide. The bow of this collapsing dome of water would become a giant wave, but also, as the landslide continued to move underwater, a series of crests and troughs would soon generate the "wave train" of the tsunami.

With the leading wave in front and crests pushing it on behind, it would sustain the power for the nine-hour journey to the American east coast."
