How does that work. Do you have to be a U.S. citizen to win the money?

Canadians can win it but you have to buy the ticket in person in one of the 44 states that's involved in the mega millions lottery or try to find a reputable site/outfit that can do it online like Congalotto (never used them). One problem is trying to fund such a transaction since all the credit card companies blacklist such sites like they do all gambling sites, even though it's not illegal in Canada they still do it because it's illegal in the US.

The whole CC hassle put me off and the chance of actually winning (even if the odds are out there) then getting caught up in a dispute with whoever actually bought the ticket on my behalf would suck, because you know it would happen for ~450 million. Just 450 million reasons to litigate. I'm hoping eventually some state creates an online system that would be open to out of state players.

Here's hoping some canuck wins. It looks like the US has collectively dropped a cold 1.5 Billion on this one.

For this draw there are 6 numbers right same as 6/49. Yet the odds for 6/49 is 1 in 14 million, but for mega lottery its 1 in 176 million. How are the odds calculated.

Players may pick six numbers from two separate pools of numbers - five different numbers from 1 to 56 and one number from 1 to 46 - or select Easy Pick. You win the jackpot by matching all six winning numbers in a drawing.

but isn't that equivalent to saying picking 6 numbers out of 1 to 56 since 1 to 46 is a subset of 1 to 56 ?

Apologies if this might sound dumb buy my Probability and Statistics is weak after 1 am :p

I assume that 5 numbers are picked from 1 to 56 and the 6th separate number is picked from 1 to 46, unlike the Canadian lotto, it seems the Mega Millions bonus number is actually picked separately from the rest by the player and not the lotto company.

I could be wrong.

For the taxes you have to pay for lotto in US, they may get 1/3 if lucky. Still huge amount of money... whoa!
It's about half. IIRC the withholding tax is about 30% with some state and depending on place civic taxes. Last time I checked.

Should have been about 300 million but it got split 3 ways. Ha ha Losers, glad I didn't win. [yes I'm kidding]
I expected it to split, but it would suck to win say the 40 million in the lotto max and then next morning find out you have to split it 2 or 3 ways. Sure it is nice, but for a short period of time between when the numbers come out and the full results come out you thought you had so much more. I guess I should wait till the next morning to check my tickets.
