It's not worth it for business owners to do a cash deal anymore, not in today's day since the owner now has to pay hst on all his stock and products. If the OP wasnt charged tax the auto shop did him a solid.

To the OP to touch on your point about what other dealers are saying to you, I wouldn't put too much trust in what they have to say, obviously it's not in their best interest to be honest with you, they want a new customer! Do you not get that?!
There's still an incentive to do cash deals (the huge underground economy is still a problem).

The HST they pay for their stock and supplies, is recoverable as an input tax credit.

Assuming they are paid in cash for certain jobs (and don't claim it - thank you James Kirk), not only do they evade the obligation to collect & remit HST, but they also evade INCOME TAXES (much more than 13%).

(I don't condone what I just explained).

So, what's the difference between a hooker and a car mechanic?
Nothing. They both have pretty high minimum rates. They both laugh when they see what I am driving. And after an appointment with either one I usually leave happy and relieved, but somewhat worried about whether I really could afford that.

Except, usually, the hooker doesn't call you a few hours later asking for more cash..so I would be inclined to trust the hooker more than the mechanic
I'm sure there are cases where it's happened, with hints about telling the wife or boss.

That's their problem. Snitchy big nose whitewaterguy wants to report them like some kind of power trip asshole cop.

There is 0 wrong in paying for things in cash.

It is however up to the individuals who receive such cash to declare it as income.

Which kind of puts those particular escorts in a comparable league to our two mechanics in question..fortunately in my 40 years of hobbling, it's never happened yet, but I have been screws over by a few mechanics and stealers hip service outlets in that time

well, its turns out it was a shitty job done. I guess lessoned learn from going there. After getting the car fix, it felt better but made some creaking noise. I thought it was just from new parts breaking in. So I had enough of the noise and I work on some jobs on the car. I jack it up and noticed that on of the nuts was loose, I go and tighten it and guess what? The nut is stripped badly and its just sitting there. I noticed also, it hardly goes thru the hole.

1. stripped nut
2 stripped bolt and wrong bolt.

They knew they stripped it and left it the way it was. Am I paying more? Hell no.

Not sure how that's karma? I paid what mechanic owner wanted. The other owner wanted more. The mechanic purposely put on a wrong bolt and stripped it and the nut. I would just call that shitty work and bad business practice.

The parts I put on were MOOG, so they aren't cheap Chinese parts. Also they didn't lube the outer tie road ends properly which was supposed to be done.

Thats karma on the business. The mechanic knew he took 2 hrs and flew by the repairs and did a shitty work. Trying to scam for more money. Shitty work and more money. Good on them.

I would pay what the mechanic owner wanted. He agreed and gave him the keys. If he didn't, no car then.

I'm assuming that the repair was for lower control arms or sway bar since it involves taking the sway bar links out. In no way I would pay extra because they had to install the links back in, its part of the original repair to disassemble and re-assemble.

dont go back

So I went to get some work done on my car. I was quoted for 3 hrs for the job. This was a cash deal for labour as I supplied my own parts. I went to pick my car and the part owner who is the mechanic charged me only 2hrs.

This morning, I get this txt from the other partner of the business saying his guy misunderstood and only charged me 2 hrs. They want an extra half hour plus the 3 hours quoted. 3.5 hrs in total

What would u do, its a independent shop, the mechanic drove me when I dropped my car off.

The mechanic partner charged me this price but the other partner wants more. What would u do? Ignore or give the money.
just pay him and dont go back they are mixed up who the boss lol dont go back but pay him
