Just bought my wife the Mazda 3 luxury package. She did not want the sport due to the wagon look. She loves the car!

Glad you liked my post stang. The car was not bought for a pocket rocket...it was bought for my wife and she already has her own Pocket Rocket.

It's a great little car. I wouldn't pay the extra $5000 for the sport package. The coup has as much space and lots of power; especially with the manual.

OK, it's not exactly a Mazda 3 but I own a Protege with 175K KM...

Overall reliability to 100K was excellent, then I got hit with tires, struts, shocks at the same time.... $1500 later...

Another supposedly common issue is vague "check engine" light problems. Over a few back to back visits they changed my catalytic converter, various engine seals and the O2 sensor. That worked for about 12 months then the light came on again...

Yet ANOTHER failed catalytic converter.

The first one had been replaced under an extended warranty, this time they wanted $1200... NO THANKS

The light is still on, and will be until I either trade the car or I need an emissions test.

Overall the car drives and handles very well. My only advice if you keep a car is buy the extended warranty. It will cost you an extra $1000 but it saved me a couple thousand bucks while they played around trying to diagnose the engine problems. I was told one of the bills would have been over $2000:eek:

I have friends that own a Mazda 3 and they like it well enough. It's a good ride.

Pro21 - Please define lemon. Did it just not work or was it not what he thought it was?

Big_iguana - Thats not correct. All mazda 3's with the exception of the mazda 6 are all made in Japan. Yes, Ford does have shares in Mazda but they are not Ford. Check your facts first.

Check the serial numbers. If it start with letter "J", then it is made in Japan.

don't forget that they are made by Ford in North America
Actually they are made in a plant in Michigan (Flat Rock) that is operated by both Ford and Mazda. Yes Ford owns Mazda but they also own Jaguar, Volvo, etc.

I have a Tribute which is the Mazda version of the Escape. Fit and finish wise they are night and day. The Mazda versions seem to have a better quality control coming off the line.

The Mazda 3 is a great car that traces its roots back to Protege, 323 and GLC before that.

I purchased a Mazda 3 in May of 2004 - and I've driven the living hell out of it. I've logged just under 175,000km and never had a problem.

In the time that I've owned it, I've had to replace the tires, both headlights and the rear break pads.

It was made in Japan - and I honestly believe I could get a lot more out of it before I have to sink a large amount of cash into it.

I have the Mazda3 GT (Sedan) and it's a great little car. Very peppy and fun to drive. Looking at my tires I'd probably have to get new ones at the two year mark but no regrets here. The bad however is that the heating system in winter isn't that great. During one of the past season's storms it was defrosting the front windshield for over 20 minutes without much effect and I've read other Mazda3 owners having the same problem. Gas mileage is about 10L/100km city driving. But if you're 5'10" or taller I'm not sure if I could recommend it as it'd be a tight fit for you.

I have a 3 GT. Being around 5'10" is no issue at all. The seat cranks up or down and I have no problem with the headroom.
The Good - peppy, fun car to drive, great handling, decent but not amazing gas mileage, reasonable price, good features
The Bad - A/C is weak, lots of brake issues, OE tires suck. Don't get the leather interior, it sucks.

most Cars today suffer from the wimp syndrome

It's unfortunate. times are tough for real cars. Only SUV's or more expensive imports seem to have a decent product.

It really is sad when even $ 40k doesn't buy you a decent top rated vehicle with the latest features.

It's still a matter of taste but the imported SUV's are still the best if you can pay for the gas and the sticker price to get it off the lot.

all domestic cars and most of the trucks unfortunately, really SUCK.

there's only a few brands and models that don't and they're Asian makes.

And buying more $ doesn't mean you get a better vehicle.

The dark ages of car manufacturing is here NOW.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Of course you can't please everybody, so you can't make the perfect car. There's always something that displeases someone.

Well dragnbiz, how do the OE tires suck? What are OE tires? :p
And why does the leather interior suck? Pleas explaine?

I'm still waiting for Pro21's explanation of why the car was a lemon.
