Well looks like we got us a new mayor. I'm not displeased with the result - for me it was between Tory & Miller anyway. On the way home I was giving serious consideration to both candidates. I was surprised to see that we had 44 candidates for mayor! I ended up voting for Tory, but I think Miller will do a good job.

Cheers to the new mayor!

Why did he have to quote Bruce Springsteen in his speech??
Well, actually I KNOW why, but its still as irritating as when Ronald Reagan misquoted Bruce's lyrics in the '80's.

Miller quoted from Badlands:
"Talk about a dream. Try to make it real."

WTF is it with politicians???

I LOVE the Boss.
But he HATES being quoted by politicians, yet they insist on it.

Is Miller already in dream-land?

Time will tell.

Lets see how really f**ked up the traffic is going to be in the mid-downtown areas if tolls are imposed on the DVP. Its going to be a freaking horor show driving along streets like Bloor/Eglinton/Lawrence/YorkMills all in the name of commie socialism.

Tolls on the DVP? Are they serious? C'mon now!
Didn’t he want to impose tolls on the 401 as well? There are going to be traffic gridlock all over the major routes.

I think David Miller is great. Read a biography about him in the Globe this weekend. He is the son of a single mom who worked three jobs to put him through private school and Harvard University. Ain't nothing wrong with a guy like that.

I think tolls on the highways are a worthwhile inconvenience if it means they'll have more money for affordable housing for the homeless.

Did any one hear candidate Kerr singing on City TV about his love of T.O.?

No, not tolls on the DVP. Tolls charging the 905ers for entering the City core would make sense. They did it in London (England, that is) and it worked marvels. Traffic actually moves.

Would you rather have had the cable monopolist Tory? He touted his "management" skills. Did you ever have to deal with Rogers? It's one of the most screwed up companies.

And the island "airport?" Ther will never be an expansion. it was all a plot to rezone the land and build condos. That may not be a bad idea but why not be honest about it????

And Barbara Hall? No tall blond men allowed to breathe or run for politics? It's time to send her out to pasture.

TOLLS???????????

When the I90 or thruway way built in NY , tolls were imposed.

The tolls were ment to pay fpr the highway and its improvements. There was even a date to abolish the tolls.

Now anyone who travels NY knows we still have them. The Irony is the only thing the tolls support is the cost of the toll system itself. Monies collected are about enough to pay the wages of those who collect them.

So before anyone supports a tax on driving somewhere. Keep in mind the collection costs.

Watch the homeless population explode as more and more business' pack up and leave for the 905 519 and 705 areas. Making it more costly to do business in Toronto does not create jobs. No jobs, more homeless people. Personally I can't stand Toronto any more. If the Politicians want to destroy it, so be it. I avoid going to TO at all costs now anyway.

Toronto spends $30,000 per homeless person , per year . It would appear it's not how much you spend but how you spend it . It's obviously being wasted . Yet you re-elect Chow et al .

Miller has no chance to be anything other than a disaster unless he cleans house . Remember Bob Rae .....great guy , smart guy disaster as premier .

Ben is a constant @ NE corner of Yonge/Bloor, and has run for mayor as many times as Lastman. He used to run a famous coffee house in Yorkville during the 60/s.

He's the guy singing his ode to Cayan Pepper.

Toronto voters rejected the son of privilege John Tory (Tory and Tory law firm was founded by grand daddy i believe) vs. the son of the single mom.

Toronto voters rejected the need for an island airport expansion for fat cat businessmen so they don't have to spend a half hour in a cab from Pearson.

Toronto voters rejected the scare tactics of 400 more cops in the street because the ones we have already are lazy enough and we don't need more.

Miller is the better choice, but i am watching him on the following:

Property taxes

Special Interest Groups

Garbage Night mares (very real problem coming our way)

Getting too cozy with the unions, though he is right, if you have a good person on staff, you need to retain them.

It would have been nice to have a guy who combined both good points from Tory (tax freeze, contract out garbage collection, and incineration), and good points from Miller (no need for 400 more cops, no airport expansion on the island.)

The jury is out, but the lesser of two evils did win.

Oh, and by the way, the DVP is owned by the City of Toronto as is the Gardiner Expressway. The 400 series highways and QEW are the property of MTO.

Torontonians will regret the election of David Miller. Hisleft ideologies will prevent him from really getting to do the job of cleaning up this corrupt group of bandits and lobbyists
Our taxes will rise and if he cans the airport deal we as taxpayers will be royally screwed as usual.

With all due respect, I think its such a joke for a SP, whom I'd like to see a true account of her cash generation and corresponding tax return (if one is filed) over the past several years, to make comments regarding how tax dollars should be spent, especially in regards to those on welfare, the homeless, etc. Not unlike a whole large number of other people out there, I have busted my ass for years in university (paid in full by myself) and in my profession, working typically 6 days a week in order to make more money only to have these bloody governments pickpocket me in order to assist most (not all) of these lazy f**ks who can't get their act togeather, or want to.

I will, however, donate a one time contribution to a fund to assemble all the homeless/squeege kids together, put them on a plane and send them to the Praires. If they want housing, then build it in low economic rent areas of the country. Beggars can't be choosy.

You make some good points at the end but you almost lost me because you obviously have some irrational prejudices against anyone who is either a businessman ( just because you have to travel does not necessarily make you a 'fat cat' ) or was born into a family with successful parents .

I'm not sure that you would enjoy Toronto very much if all the businessmen left , which will happen because of the traffic and taxes .

I don't know if the cops are lazy or not but I can tell you that some of the public works employees are . I once watched 7 employees doing road repair outside my former downtown office . One backhoe operator , 2 guys with a shovel , one guy with a clipboard and 3 doing absolutely nothing . They arrived at 10 am and left at 4 pm . Their accomplishment for the day was to remove a section of pavement roughly 6 ft by 12 ft .

By the way.....we moved north last year . The DVP is rediculous .

The CBC made a big deal that he has a degree in economics from Harvard. Well, what do you know, Harvard U can revoke a degree any time they want.
I'm always amazed how much stock people put in a person's formal education.

Miller may very well have a degree in economics, but think back to Bob Rae, who was a Rhodes Scholar in economics. Remember how he evicserated the economy?

I'm worried!

Give me someone with "hands-on" skills any day over someone with only a theoretical background.
