Mayor Miller is wanting a wage freeze for NON - UNION workers in the city of Toronto. He says this will save the city 20 million over 2 years.

And?

Miller (or anyone else) can't order a wage freeze for unionized workers because there is a contract in place.

Given the Ontario economy will shrink by that much at least I think that 2-3% is a fair decrease.

save the city money!!! I'd give workers 3% raise and get rid of 85% of counsel. There is noway we need all them clowns complaining every month, that's why the city gets nothing done. Give us 10 good people and a mayor and things would work much better.

If a contract is negotiated through a professional arbitrator appointed by the city - such as the TTC contract - why is the resulting contract not fair?

How can it be fairer?

You can argue that the union is too protective of the incompetent but not that the base contract is unfair .... this arbitrator is a professional in fairness is he not ?

Open bidding for those jobs would be fair.

The concept of the closed shop removes any chance of an optimal contract from the paying publics perspective.

Not quite. Fair is a relative term. Cashiers, IMO, should not be making 60k+ a year plus benefits, yet that's what the TTC booth people make. That contract was negotiated "fairly", after the TTC unions kindly held the city hostage last year.

This too. and gods know I never agree with Lancs about anything political, but he's dead on, here.

Well it is fair teh union and TTC management couldn't come to an agreement so the union decideed to walk off teh job legally. The province then ordered them back to work. Now both Management and the union would of chosen an independant arbitrator where he/she would of come a final decision based on both sides presenting there arguement. Many workers in the TTC booth are under what we call duty to accomadate the worker do to say a disablity or workplace accident.

We should fire everyone who works for the TTC the way Reagan fired all the air traffic controllers. I can't imagine that TTC workers are any more critical than ATC's.

Sure the city would take a hit for a month or two while their replacements are hired (probably in many cases the same people being hired back under new terms) but in the long run the savings to taxpayers would be HUGE.

Having done that the city could then approach all its other unionized groups with a simple message: You want to be next, or are you going to make us a fair deal?

You cannot fire them for taking a legal action. Regan fired workers who did an illegal action and replaced them. This city cannot run 1 day without the people crying foul when there on strike for a day what would happen when you'd have to trian 5500 workers
