As long as Mauer and Suzuki are in the American League, can anybody else ever win the batting title? They hit like Wade Bogg used to hit.

Joe Mauer may be the most underrated player in baseball this year. Given that he is a good catcher as well, to me he is a no-brainer for AL MVP despite his team's record.

Here
Suzuki and Mauer... this year. Catchers deteriorate over time due to the day-to-day pounding they take, and Suzuki is not getting any younger. There are plenty of good hitters out there with a shot in any given year

this guy could probably play another 10 years if he wanted too.
He has the kind of body that is probably good for another 10 years. Also, I don't recall he ever suffering any injuries. Pete Rose's hit record might be in jeopardy some day in the future.

Did you resalize, this is going to be Mauer's third batting title in four years. This is not simply a good hitter having a good year.. its not just this year, Your right catchers will slow down quicker but he is only 26.

How many hitters have done that in the last forty years (3 batting titles over four years).... Only Three. Wade Boggs, Tony Gwynn and Rod Carew. I don't count Larry Walker because he played at Coors Field which induces alot of cheap singles and extra home runs

If I was his manager, I would move him to first base or designated hitter before he turns 30. Guys who win plural batting titles don't come around that often. (Has a Jay ever won the batting title?)

If Ichiro started playing MLB in 1994 instead of spending all those years in the Japanese League I think he would have broken Pete Rose' record for most career hits.

Ichiro:

Rose:

At current pace he'll have more career hits than Rose by around end of 2014 season if you combine Japanese League with total MLB hits.
Suzuki is probably the greatest right fielder in the history of the game.

I agree with the Kilgore's point about Suzuki probably have beating Rose.

I still think despite an easy hall of famer (due to his all around game), he is a little overrated.

I can't help but think he is a little selfisk at the plate given his amazing bat control ,... his on-base percetnage would be so much greater if he worked counts - he is too content to hit bad pitches for singles early in the count, rather then working the coutn to get pitches he could drive.... his great bat control could ward off pitches with 2 strikes... he could get so many walks, and his OBP and SLG could be higher. Instead he selfishly does things to get more hits, then doing things which would make him a better hitter (my speculation anyway). He is still a great hitter... and there are selfish HR guys too.

I don't disagree with him moving positions... although I am not so sure that is a manager's decision... its probably more of an organizational decision.

Short-term he is most valuable at a position with replacement players that are nowhere near as good as him... which would be catcher,

An organization that thinks Mauer is part of there long term plan for the next decade might make the move next year. But I think Minnesota sees that they will be losing this guy at some point, and will milk him for all he is worth as a catcher.

Thought about him after I posed the question. I think the Jays had 3 .300 hitters that year. Alomar and Molitor being the other two.
I'm pretty sure they were all well over .300 because they came in 1-2-3 for batting average in the AL that year.

Jorge Posada isn't getting any younger. How much longer 'til the Yankees can throw big money at Mauer?
