A woman is dead and a man is in hospital with gunshot wounds following a violent home invasion in Markham Monday night.
York police were called to a home at 238 Helen Ave. near Kennedy Road and Highway 407 at about 10:30 p.m. after receiving a 911 call.
Police say three armed suspects forced their way inside the home, before shooting a 53-year-old mother and a 57-year-old father inside. The victim's 24-year-old daughter was separated from her parents and tied up.
The suspects initially confronted the victims and demanded money. Then, the parents were shot several times. The suspects spent about 30 minutes in the house looking for cash and other valuables before leaving. The father managed to get to a neighbouring home for help.
Emergency crews arrived to find the mother – Bieh Ha Pan -- without vital signs and her husband -- Huei Hann Pan -- with gunshot wounds. Their daughter was not hurt and the father was taken to hospital where he remains in serious condition.
The family had immigrated to Canada from Vietnam and also have a son, who was not home at the time of the attack.
Police are looking for three suspects in connection with the home invasion. The first suspect is described as a black male, 28 to 33 years of age, five-foot-six to five-foot-seven with long dreadlocks. The second suspect is described as a black male, about 31 years of age, five-foot-seven to five-foot eight in height with a thin build. His face was covered with a bandana. The third suspect is described as a thin male who spoke with a Caribbean accent. The first two suspects were wearing dark clothing.
Investigators have released security footage from the street, and are appealing to anyone who recognized the vehicle to contact police.
The video shows that the suspects may have entered the home through the front door. Police believe the incident was random attack.
Residents are being reminded to keep their doors and windows locked at all times, and to not answer the door if they don't know the visitor.
Anyone with information is asked to call York Regional Police at 1-866-287-5025 x. 7865 or Crime Stoppers anonymously.

Hope York Region LE is pulling all their officers out of the MP's to focus on capturing these bastards. Note that there was also another Markham home invasion a week earlier.

Imagine how much worse if not for the gun registry. Michael Thompson had proposed a solution to this gun epidemic but the PC's (politically correct) aborted it before it was even born.But on a side note, i guess that gun registry and ban of handguns in toronto is really working...

Just a long shot, but I noticed both husband and wife were hardworking individuals. Well not to be too stereotypical, vietnamese are generally linked to a number of cash business, like restaurants, nail salons, dry cleaners etc.. They could be targeted for suspicion of large amounts of cash in the house. Once again, not necessarily so but just like there are a large number of construction workers and contractors in italian and Portuguese homes and variety store owners in Korean homes...its a pretty good possibility.

The Pans’ daughter managed to free herself and call 911, bringing police to the scene within three minutes, according to La Barge. Her father also made his way to a next-door neighbour’s house, where he sought help.
“This is a very lucky man to be alive and if not for the grace of God, we could have been dealing with two homicides here,” La Barge said.
Police also said the intruders made off with some cash, but would not say how much.
It seems odd that the suspects would hang around for 30 minutes after discharging multiple rounds in a house on a quiet residential street like that - neighbours too likely to hear the shots.
If the robbers suspected cash was kept in the house, they might have shot the husband with non-lethal wounds in an attempt to get him to tell them where the money they believed was in the house was located. Why shoot him multiple times at point blank range - yet he can still go next door for help. I'm just speculating, but it reads like they were wounding him as torture to get him to tell them where the money was.
At any rate, a horrible crime and I hope the olice catch those responsible.

Years ago Montreal was the bank robbery capital of Canada. The police came up with the simple strategy that if they caught you in the process of robbing a bank, you took a slug to the head. No warning shot, no warnings period. They just shot you dead. Eventually would-be bank robbers got the message and bank robberies dropped dramatically. Seems like a good strategy for dealing with home invasions.
