Seems like it was a sincerely inadvertent violation with a prescription she had for years that was only banned Jan 01st.
They should grandfather people like Maria. She said it is to help her blood circulate and has been taking it for 10 years. What happens if she stops taking the med and she dies? Stupid ban! Ridiculous!

This is nothing more than an unfortunate happening. The drug does nothing to enhance performance.

This is a non-story.

Maybe the drug keeps her alive?

Anyway, I have this theory about very tall people. Maria is 6'2" or 6'3" that is a long long way to push blood from her heart to her toes. Logically, it probably means the heart has to work harder to move blood that far. Meanwhile Danny DeVito who is probably 3'8" has a much shorter distance from heart to toes. I'm not a doctor but I did sleep at the Trump Tower last night.

Not how it's being reported over here (and obviously the authorities saw it differently as well):

Here’s another article which clarifies why medonium is performance-enhancing:

What is Meldonium/Mildronate?

Meldonium decreases the beta-oxidation of fatty acids and shifts cellular metabolism towards the oxidation of carbohydrates, which requires far less oxygen per ATP molecule than beta-oxidation of fatty acids. This sparing of oxygen could be of huge benefit under hypoxic conditions. The most obvious benefits have been seen in the treatment of ischemic heart disease, but three is evidence to suggest that Meldonium could be equally beneficial under the low oxygen conditions induced by intense endurance exercise (3).

One review (4) of the effects of Meldonium on exercise performance listed the following benefits:

Decreased levels of lactate and urea in blood
Improved economy of glycogen: level of glycogen increased in the cells during the long-lasting exercise
Increased endurance properties and aerobic capabilities of athletes
Improved functional parameters of heart activity
Increased physical work capabilities
Increased rate of recovery after maximal and sub-maximal loads
Activates CNS functions and protects against stress

I would of thought it would be helping her voice heal from all that screaming she does during the match. And since she has been taking it for many years, doesn't it mean she was a cheater for all the time that she played?

Let me explain it to you, it wasn't banned until Jan. 1st 2016, do you understand now?? what happened before then is irrelevant.

She is a professional athlete and she got caught using a ban substance, she should pay the consequences just like everyone else, that is totally bull that she did not know. If it was Serena Williams getting caught, you guys on this board would not be this apologetic for her.

So, you take a particular antihistamine because it helps you breathe better. You've been taking it for years.

On January 1, 2016 the organization you work at declared it illegal. You're banned (not 'ban') at work because of this now.

This is alright with you then.

Was there a pre-warning of this ban coming?...
the powers that be would have been researching this for atleast a year..I would think...same with the WADA...so were all athletes warned of the upcoming ban..or was this sprung on them??
dont pro athlete have to declare all prescription meds they are on ?
It was put on the banned list in SEPT/ 2015...WADA kept close tabs on it for a year before putting on the list...
SO
Everyone knew the ban was coming...Sharapova ignored it.....

I don't know Dapper, there is more to this story.
She was advised just like every other tennis athlete, what makes her so special, all her major sponsors are now dropping her. She was not clean for the Aussie open.

Masha, is my favorite female tennis player.

She really does have it all: talent, looks and a fine brain.

I am not at all a fan of hers, but what difference does it make if her story is bullshit or not. She is not denying or appealing or asking for special treatment or anything else. She said, "I did it, I accept responsibility and I will accept my punishment."

Totally respect her attitude unlike the 99% of other athletes who get nabbed for different infractions.

But she still was cheating all those years cause she was using the substance all those times. So she was a cheater period, regardless of the legality issue use of the drug.

Therefore she cheated all of those other skinny white girls she payed against. Fact.
