Mapping a drive across domains?

If the old guy fixes it, please let me know what the problem was. I'm curious as to what he had setup without vpn's or trusted domains. I'm assuming for such a small file, it was a simple FTP thing.

So you have VNC access now? uVNC (ultravnc) does allow for file transfer by merely doing the ole window cut and paste. Not sure about the original VNC though.

It looks like your offices are connected through Routed ADSL Lines and thats what I mean by directly (follow benstt's instruction to resolve the name). If you want to learn how to set up a trust in NT4, just go to the Microsoft website and do a search. One easy solution is to setup an IP based NAS where both offices can access.

Victory!!

It was probably a combination of trusted domains and faulty LMHOSTS setup.

Both domains were previously trusted to each other (via Administrative Tools, User Manager for Domains, Policies) but on the KITCHENER server, the old company was one of the trusted domains and was first in the list if that mattered. I deleted it.

The LMHOSTS files on both servers were very complicated with 90% of the references pointing to the old company mappings. I tentatively set up new lines according to Microsoft knowledge base on LMHOSTS (don't have the link). There were no prior entries on domain name resolution so I put in new lines which required exact spacing.

The I used the

net use k: \\kitserv\sharedk password /user:/kitchener/administrator /persistent:yes

and almost as an anticlimax, it was mapped.

So, in hindsight it was just keystrokes, no hardware or software to buy. I appreciate the tips and clues I got from you guys to help me through this.

Adios

The protocol to ping isn't the same as the one to map the drive. So you might not be a close as you think.
Wow ..... so u can ping without routes?
I am not a Windows guy ... just a lowly Unix Admin but i am pretty sure Windows needs routes for TCP/IP to work....

Glad u got it working .... i had a feeling it had to do with trusts as i mentioned in my post just not completely sure where windows handles it.

This is what I like about TERB. People helping people! :)

(But honey, I'm only using TERB for technical support! Really!)

Whatever dude. I am not sure where you get that from what I wrote. Where the f*** did I say you don't need a route? The point was/is if you can ping something it doesn't mean that other services are available.

In your original post to my reply u had mentioned programing a router .... and needing to add routes .... so when i mentioned that he could ping them the routes must be there. You said it was different protocol so may not be as close as i thought i was..... so since i was talking routing and u mentioned routing .... i assumed u meant routing.
If i was mistaken i apologize.
If you are going to setup your own router i suggest the latest free BSD candidate and Zebra ..... just my 2 cents..
Hunter if mistook what you were posting i do apologize ..... but read what u had posted and with out knowing what you were thinking, it is what was implied.
Thanks
